UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. LESTER BLAIR, OF BLANDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO LEVI E. HARGER, OF SAME PLACE.
JAR FOR PACKING AND PRESERVING BUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,783, dated May 24, 1881.
(N 0 mod el.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, A. LESTER BLAIR, ot' Blandford, in the county ofHampden and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Jars for Packing and Preserving Butter, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to improvements in jars for packing and preserving butter; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as hereinafter shown, described, and particularly pointed out in the 7 claim.
The figure of the dra ing represents a view embodying my invention.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A represents the body of my improved jar, having a bead, to, extending around the bottom edge thereof to strengthen the same, and for convenience of handling. The walls of the jar are made flaring to near its top portion, where an outward curved re-enforce, m, is formed. This re-enforce is provided with a shoulder, m, a screw-thread, a, a seat, 1?, for the packing i, and above said seat an upward extension, I.
The letter (J represents the cover engaging the top edge of the extension, and having a downwardly-extended flange, d, the inner wall of which comes in contact with the outer Wall of the extension and the bottom edge thereof 30 resting on the packing i.
The letter designates the screw-ring passed over the outer wall of the cover and engaging the thread a, the bottom edge of which is screwed down on the shoulder m, thus causing the bottom edge of the flange d to be forced tightly on the packing to prevent the admission of air or water.
Having described my invention, whatI claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The jar A, having its sides flaring upward, and curved outward near the top,'forming a re-enforee, m, provided with the shoulder m, screw-thread a, and seat It for the packing i, and the extension 1 above said seat, the cover 5 0 having the flange d in contact with the top and outer wall of said extension and the screwring f engaging the cover, the thread a, and the shoulder m, as described.
A. LESTER BLAIR.
