To @ZZ whom it mag/,concerns A Be it known that I, JAMES LAWRENCE CAf NALE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Jug-Packing Box, of which 'the following is a p specification.

This invention relates to boxes for packing and shipping vesselsand more especially to while at the same time providing a small and.

compact package for the jug.

With this and other objects in view the invention consists in-the novel construction,

combination, and arrangement of parts h ere-l inafter more fully described, illustrated, and

claimed, it being understood that the improvements are susceptible to changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details of construction without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, partly broken away, of a packing-box for jugs constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33of Fig. 2. Fig. Li is a similar view on the line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail and perspective of the vholding-partition which receives the neck and handle portion of the jug.

Referring particularly to the drawings the numeral l designates a wooden box,preferably of a rectangular configuration and adapted to have the open side thereof closed by au ordinary cover 2, which is nailed or otherwise secured in place to the box-bod y after the jug has been p laced therein. Y

A l Fitted within they box-body 1, contiguous to one end thereof, is a rest-frame 3, nailed or otherwise fixedly connected to the side por'- `tions of the box-body and provided with a substantially U-shaped seat 4, communicating with the open side of the box-body and adapted to receive the circular base portion of the jug 5.- `The said rest-frame 3 is held spaced a slight distance from the adjacent end of the box-body by means of aspacingstrip 6 and is reinforced at its lower end by means of a transverse brace-strip 8, fitting against the side of the rest-frame opposite the spacing-strip 6, which is interposed between said frame and the contiguous end Wall of -the box-bod y. The said U -shaped rest-frame 3' corresponds in width tothe depth of the box-body, so that the circular base portion ofthe jug 5 may lie wholly within the seat 4 of the said frame, and thereby be properly supported at this point.

Arranged within the end portion ofthe boxbody, opposite the rest-framev 3, isa holdingpartition 9,'which entends obliquely across the body from side to side thereof and 4is therefore spaced a distance from the contiguous end wall to leave room' for the projecting portions of the neck and handle of the jug, as may be plainly seen from the drawings'. The said holding-partition 9 is nailed or otherwise fastened to the side walls of the box-body and isA provided with a pair of substantially parallel recesses lO and 1l, communicating wi th the open side of the box-body and forming therebetween a retaining-tongue 13, over which the handle-loop of the jug is placed when the latter is inserted within the box. The recesses 10 and l1 of the holding-partition 9 are also substantially U shaped, andthe side walls of the larger and central recess 10 are'beveled, as indicated at l2, so as to properly iit the side portions of thejug-neck, which rests within said recesses.

When the j ug is positioned Within the boxbody, it will be observed that the circular base portionthereof rests within the U-shaped ,seat of the rest-frame 3, while the short neck of the jug rests within the central recess 10 of the holding-partition 9; also, the handle 5- of the jug lies within the rest 11 of the hold-A ICO between the two recesses l and l1. Said retaining-tongue 13 therefore serves to prevent the jug from material movement in an axial direction. With the jug positioned as described it will be observed that the same is entirely out of contact With the box-body except at its strongest points, Where it is supported-nam ely, at the circular base and neck portions thereof-and when the cover 2 is secured over the open side of the box the jug is firmly retained in engagement with the restframe and holding-pa`rtition, and is thereby effectually prevented from moving in any direction Within the box.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed isl. In a packing-box for jugs, the combination with the boX-b'od y, of a rest-frame fitted Within one end of the body and adapted to receive therein the base portion of the jug, and a holdingpartition fitted Withinl the opposite end of the box-body and provided with a retaining-tongue adapted to receive thereover the handle of the jug, substantially as set forth.

2. In a packing-box for jugs, the combination with the box-body, of a rest-frame fitted Within one end of the box-body and adapted to receive the base portion of the jug, and a holding-partition fitted Within the opposite end of the box-body, and provided With a seat or recess for the neck of the jug, and with a retaining-tongue adapted to receive thereover the handle of the jug, substantially as set forth.

3. In a packing-box for jugs, the combination with-the box-body, of a rest-frame fitting within one end of the body and provided with a U-shaped 4seat to receive the circular base portion of the jug, and aholding-partition arranged obliquely Within the opposite end of the box-body, said holding-partition being provided With a U-shaped seat or recess for the neck of the jug and With a straight retainingtongue adapted to receive thereover the handle of the jug, substantially as set forth.A
