PATENT OFFICE.
JAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,810, dated June 28, 1904. Application filed November 12, 1903. Serial No. 180,939. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. TEEPLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsburg, in the county of Brooke and State of est Virginia, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in J ars,of which improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in means for securing lids or covers on jars, &c., and has for its object a construction in which the cover is secured in place by independent clamps which are arranged in notches or recesses, so as to be protected as against accidental removal.
The invention is hereinafter fully described and claimed. 1
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a jar having its cover secured by my improved fasteners. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation, the plane of section being indicated by the line III III, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the clamp, and Fig. 5 is a similar vie-w of a modified form of the clamp.
Inthe practice of my invention the jar 1 is provided at the upper end of its neck with an outwardly-projecting flange 2, which is notched or cut away, as at 3, at two or more points. The cover 4 has a depressed body portion adapted to fit within the neck and is provided with an outwardly-extending flange 5, between which and the neck is interposed a suitable gasket or packing-ring 6, adapted to form a tight hermetic joint between the cover and jar. The flange 5 of the cover is notched to correspond with the notches formed in the flange 2 of the neck, and into these notches are inserted the body portions of the clamps 7. As shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5, these clamps are provided at one end with laterally-extending portions 8, adapted to engage under the flange 2 on opposite sides of the notches. The opposite ends of the clamps are provided with resilient books 9, adapted to spring over projections on the top of the cover, said projections being formed, by preference, by a continuous rib 10. The wings or lateral extensions 8 arepreferably formed integral with the clamp, as shown in Fig. 4, or may be by a wire, around which the lower end of the clamp is turned, as clearly shown in Fig. 5.
It is characteristic of my improved clamp that it can be entirely detached from the jar and cover and is readily placed in position to secure the cover on the jar. As these clamps are arranged within notches on the jar and cover, they are not liable to be knocked off or detached when handling the jar or during its shipment.
I claim herein as my invention- The combination of a jar provided with a notched flange, a cover having its edge similarly notched and having a projection on its upper side, and clamps arranged in said notches and provided at one end with wings engaging the flange on the jar and with hooks at the opposite ends adapted to engage the projection on the cover, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand. v
WILLIAM S. TEEPLE. Witnesses:
