J. H. HOOVER MILK GAN.
Patented Nov. 11, 1884.
UNITED STATES J. HARMAN HOOVER, OF ASHLAND, PENNSYLVANIA.
MILK-CAN.
EPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 307,947, dated November 11, 1884.
Application filed August 7, 1984. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, J. HARMAN HOOVER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ashland, Schuylkill county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements inMilk- Cans, of which the following is aspecification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a milk-can top and lid as to prevent the splashing of the milk and loss of the same by leakage between the can and the lid. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a sectional view of a milk-can top and lid with my improvements, and Fig. 2 a view of a modified form of the same.
A is the body of the can, and B the upper portion or neck of the same, which has some distance below the mouth a contracted por tion, a, to which fits snugly a central cylindrical projection, 11, on the lid D, the latter having an annular downwardly-projecting flange, f, which fits closely to the upper vertical portion of the neck of the can, and rests upon an internal rib, g, inthe neck, as shown in Fig. 1, the use of this rib not being essential, however, as the lower edge of the flange may, if desired, be brought into contact with the contraction a of the neck, as shown in Fig. 2. The close joint between the contracted neck and the projection 22 of the lid prevents the splashing of the milk into violent contact with the lid when the can is roughly handled, and even if a portion of the milk finds its way into that portion of the neck above the con- 5 traction a this milk is prevented from escaping by reason of the close fit of the flangef of the lid to the vertical portion of the neck of the can, and, in the case of the can shown in Fig. l, to the rib g. The flangefthus becomes of importance to the combination, for the lid may be loosened by the constant and forcible splashing of the milk against the projection Z), so that. in the absence of the flange, the milk which entered the upper portion of the neck might escape between the lid and the mouth ofthe can.
I therefore claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the can, having a neck with upper vertical portion and a 0011 traction, a, below the same, with the lid having a central projection, b, fitting snugly to the contraction a, and a flange, f, fitting closely to the vertical portion of the neck, as set forth.
2. The combination of the can, having a neck with upper vertical portion and the in ternal rib, g, and contraction a below the same,
i with the lid having a central projection, b,
, fitting snugly to the contraction a, and a flange,
f, fitting closely to the vertical portion of the neck and seated upon the rib g, asset forth.
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. HARMAN HOOVER.
