FREDERICK A. W. DAVIS, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO ELIZABETH K. DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
STREET-BOX FOR GAS OR WATER PIPES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 530,887, dated December 11, 1 894.
Application filed March 23, 1894. Serial No. 504,786- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. W. DAVIS,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Street-Boxes for Gas or Water Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a superior cap for street and curb boxes for water and gas pipes, whereby the interior of such boxes may be very effectually protected from the admission of water or any extraneous matter, and be very conveniently and easily attached and detached, as will be hereinafter more particularly described and claimed. I
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made apart hereof, and on which similar letters of reference indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is an under side perspective view of the cap of my improved street box;
Fig. 2, an upper end perspective view of the box itself; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the box and cap assembled, a portion of the side of the box being broken away to show the interior; Fig. 4, a central sectional view, and Fig. 5 a transverse sectional view looking upwardly from the dottedline 5 in Figs. 3 and 4.
In said drawings the portions marked A represent the street box, and B the cap.
The street box A has a raised rim a, surrounding its upper end, and aprojecting lug a within its upper end, as shown.
The cap B has an annular central flange B extending down from its under side and adapted to fit within the upper end'of the box A, and this flange B has a substantially T-shaped slot in one side, leaving two wings I), as shown most plainly in Figs. 1 and 3. The cap has also, at the extreme outer edge of its top portion, an annular flange b, which surrounds the annular flange a on the upper end of the box, and this arrangement, as will be readily seen by a reference especially to Fig. 4, precludes any possibility of admission of any moisture from the outside when the box is closed, while the lines of division being substantially horizontal render the parts easy to separate in freezing weather.
The cap is applied and removed as follows: When said cap is OK, its flange B is placed within the mouth of the box, in position so that the space between the two wings I) will pass down over the lug orprojection or within said box. The cap is then turned in either direction, by means of a wrench applied to the bar 17 on its top, or otherwise, until the upper side of one of the wings b comes against the under side of the projection a, which draws the captightly and firmly onto the top of the box, thus securing them rigidly and tightly together. In removing the cap it is only necessary to turn it until the space he tween the wings I) is below the lug or projection a, when it can be readily raised off.
Havingthus fully described my said invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a street box for gas or water pipes, with the box proper having an annular flange a, and a projection or lug a, of the cap B having a central tubular projection with a T-shaped slot therein',,and also provided with an annular flange b surrounding the flange a when in place, the lines of division between the cap B and the upper end of the box A on which it rests being substantially horizontal, substantially as shown and described.
Inwitness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal, at Indianapolis, Indiana, this 19th day ofMarch, A. D. 1894.
FREDERICK A. W. DAVIS. [L. 8.]
