Description
F. FOSTER.
COMMODE-COVER,
Patented Nov. 21, 1876.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
FRANK FOSTER, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT m CbMMODE-CQVERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 184,606, dated November 21, 1876; application filed September 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FOSTER, of Oincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented an Improvement in Commode-Govers, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has for its objects such a construction of commode cover or top as that it can, when in use, be placed securely upon the top of the commode, and answer all the pur poses of the ordinary commode-chair, while being of economical manufacture; and my invention consists, in connection with suitablyperforated disk of suitable material, of a pcripheral flange, secured thereto and extending beyond the surface, to act as a'retainingbarrier, more fully described hereafter.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a commode and top, illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is'a partial plan of the commode-top. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the top hinge.
A represents the ordinary commode for chamber use. B is a disk of Wood, provided with suitable aperture 12, and of a size to cover the top of the commode. Around the periphery of this disk B I secure a flange, G, of metal or suitable materiahin such a manner as to extend beyond the surface of the disk at or nearly at right angles thereto, as seen in section in Fig. 1. The disk thus formed and provided is intended to be placed upon the top of the commode A, as seen in Fig. 1, with flange O encircling the flange a of the commode in such a manner as to prevent displacement of the disk laterally when in use; and by the use of this top a comfortable and secure seat is provided to answer the purposes of an ordinary commode-chair at a nominal expense, besides admitting of compact stowage when not in use. It is, however, obvious that the ring 0 may not extend continuously around the disk B, as seen in the drawing, but may be in sections at different points around the periphery of the disk; or, indeed, the useful properties of the band may be secured in aseriesof lugs around the periphery. As an article of comfort for travelers, it admits of being taken with them in a trunk among other things; and for the closer packing under these circumstances, I form the disk in two parts, and secure them together by hinges D. These hinges are mortised into the side of the disk, and the two leaves thereof connect together by means of link at, in such a manner as to provide a smooth top surface for the hinge.
In this manner I provide an easy and comfortable seat for commodes, which is of inexpensive manufacture, durable, and of a size and nature to admit of easy shipment or carriage.
Having thus described my invention, I claim A commode-seat having in combination the perforated disk B b and retaining flange or projection U, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set my hand.
FRANK FOSTER. Witnesses:
EDGAR J. Gaoss, JOHN A. CONN.
