CORSET.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,287, dated May 10, 1881,

Application filed February 12, 1881, (Model.)

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WM. J. BREWSTER, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have in vented a new Iniprovement in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents, in the figure, a view of one-half the corset.

This invention relates to an improvement in corsets, the object being to provide practical means for contracting the corset over the hips; and it consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.

A represents the front or clasp edge of onehalf the corset, and B the rear or lacing edge of the same part. The cut of the corset between the front and rear is immaterial to this invention.

At the lower edge of the corset, and startin g from the front or clasping edge, as at C, I attach a broad pocket, D, following the lower edge from the front toward the rear, over the hip sect-ion. Through this pocket I place a strap, E, attaching it to the body of the corset only at the front end C, leaving it free through the pocket, and extending to the rear sufficien tly far to meet the correspoudin g strap coming from a like pocket on the other half, and attached to the front edge of the saidother half, the straps provided with suitable means for engagement with the other part-as, for instance, a buckle, as at F, or other suitable engaging devices.

This device enables the wearer to draw tightly the lower edge of the corset or adjust its extension at pleasure.

The pocket D incloses and protects the strap from wear or displacement over the hip.

I do not broadly claim straps attached to the two parts of a corset at the lower edge for the purpose ofadjustment, as sueh,I am aware, is not new; but

What I do claim is- A corset constructed with a pocket, D, at the lower edge of each half, and extending from the front edge backward over the hipsection, combined with a strap attached to the front end of each pocket, running backward through and free in said pockets, and provided at the rear end with means for adjustable engagement, substantially as described.
