WILLIAM A. NETTLETON, OF BBIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,679, dated June 7, 1881. Application filed April 21, 1881. (Model) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. A. N ET'ILETON, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanyin g drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in corsets; and it consists in the combination of elastic gores or inserted pieces in each half of the corset, with a belt or other equivalent means for contracting the corset around the waist, as willbe more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a corset which is sufficiently elastic to fit loosely and comfortably upon the body, and which can be contracted at .any time by the wearer, so as to apply pressure around the waist without contracting the corset around the bust or over the hips in such a manner as to be uncomfortable.
-Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention complete. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken through the middle of the corset.
A represents a corset of any desired make,
shape, or construction that may be preferred, and which has inserted in each of its halves the two elastic pieces C. These elastic pieces come'just under the arms and over the hips of the wearer, and by their elasticity allow the corset to lit loosely and comfortably. The inner ends of these inserted pieces are not united together, but there is a space, D, of any suitable length and width left between them, so as to allow the corset to be freely contracted around the Waist of the wearer by means of the belt G without causing any wrinkles at this point, and for the purpose of allowing free ventilation. The beltG is made in two separate and distinct parts, and each part has its rear end fastened to the portion of the corset in front of the elastic pieces, and is then passed back through a guiding-loop, I, which is attached to the corset in the rear of the elastic pieces in any suitable mann er, and then passed forward through suitable keepers, 0, over the dividing-line busks in front. One of these parts of the belt is provided with a buckle, P, while the other part simply passes through the buckle and is the part upon which the pull is made when the corset is to be contracted around the waist of the wearer.
While the wearer is in undress the belt need not be fastened, or but very loosely, and then the elasticity of the inserted elastic pieces will allow the body the greatest ease and freedom. When it is desired to use the corset for full dress it is only necessary to pull upon this strap, when any desired pressure may be applied around the waist of the wearer Without in any manner contracting the corset under the arms or over the hips in such a manner as to be uncomfortable.
I am aware that elastic pieces have been used in connection with corsets, and this I do not claim in itself.
I am also aware that bands have been used around the waists of corsets for the purpose of tightening them at this point, and this I also disclaim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. A corset having inserted elastic pieces in the side sections of each half, in combination with a belt constructed and arranged substantially as described, by means of which the corset can be tightened around the waist without contracting the corset either at its top or bottom, substantially as shown.
2. A corset having theinserted elastic pieces C, and provided with the openings D between the elastic pieces, in combination with a belt,
G, made in two parts. the rear ends of which parts are attached to the corset upon the front sides of the openings and passed back through a suitable keeper on the rear side of the openin g and passed forward so as to be fastened together at their front ends, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM ALFRED NETTL'ETON. Witnesses:
W. L. FLYNN, V. R. C. GIDDINGS.
