PATENT MOSES K. BORTREE, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF OF HIS RIGHT TO CHARLES W. HIGBEE, OF SAME PLACE.
CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part. of Letters Patent No. 230,462, dated July 2'7, 1880.
Application filed anuary 28, 1880.
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Moses K. BOB-TREE, of the city and county of Jackson, and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in 5 Corsets, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in corsets, by means of which a greater adjustability can be obtained than-has been heretofore had as corsets have been usually constructed.
In the manufacture of corsets it is customary to make all of each'of the sizes made alikethat is to say, that each size is cut from its own patternshence all of that size are precise duplications of each other. Experience teaches that more adjustability is required, as ladies wearing the same sized corset so vary in the development of busts and otherwise that great difficulty is found in fitting corsets as ordinarily made to the different varieties of form requiring the same size of corset in the waist. Such adjustability is further desired to enable the wearer to adjust the corset to a 2 5 longer or shorter length of waist, to enable her to wear with the same corset longer or shorter waisted dresses with ease and comfort.
Hence the object of my invention is to construct a corset with such of the parts adjust- 0 able vertically as will allow the wearer to adapt them to all the varying conditions under which they are desired to be worn, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective 3 5 of one of my improved corsets with one of the busts removed. Fig. 2 is a perspective of one of the busts detached. Fig. Sis a cross-sea tion on w w in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a similar view on y y in Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A A represent the two parts forming the front of the corset cut away, as shown at d. To each side of this cutaway portion are secured metallic guides b.
0 represents a bust removed and formed. into proper shape, and to ltSfzllWO sides are secured metallic slides a, which, when the bust is in place, have a vertical motion in the guides b secured to the cut-away portion of the corset.
D are elastic straps secured at one end to each side of the lower portion of the bust, and the other ends of these straps are provided with eyes designed, when the bust is in place, to engage with the hooks d, which are secured on each side near the upper edge of the corset and on each side of the cutaway portion thereof. The adjustability thus secured will allow, when the wearer is in a stooping position, the bust of the corset to be forced down by the pressure of the bust of the wearer, and the elastic straps will draw the bust back into position when the wearer becomes again erect.
These busts are designed to be made of different sizes in fullness and sold separate from the corset, so that the purchaser of a corset of the construction described may obtain a bust of any required size, as all the bust-fastenin gs will be of uniform size with the guides upon the corsets.
I do not desire to confine myself to the construction of the devices named to secure the adjustability of the busts simply, for many other devices might be adopted in combination with a bust and corset to produce the same result, and fastenings of various kinds may be employed to secure the bust in the corset to such position in the corset as the wearer might desire; and the fastenings and slides may be covered in anyconvenient or ornamental way;
or a similar adj ustability might be obtained by making the busts of the corsets in the ordinary way and iusertin g a similarly-constructed part, as shown in Fig. 2, to the cutaway portion of the corset over the hips without departing from the spirit of my invention, which is to so construct a corset with adjustable parts, substantially as described, by means of which corsets of the same size may be comfortably and easily worn upon forms varying in length receive and hold in position vertically-adj ust- I able busts, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. A detachable bust-piece the sides of which 5 are provided with suitable fastenings to adapt such bust-piece to be vertically adjusted to it corset, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of a corset the sides of IO the cut-away portions of which are provided with suitable guides or fastenings, with the adjustable part0, the sides of which are provided with slides or fastenings adapted to allow the part to be adjusted vertically to the cut-away portions of the corset, substantially 15 as and for the purposes specified.
