To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LUCY A. WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda. and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corset Belts or Girdles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to womens undergarments, and more particularly to corsets;

The primary object of the invention is to provide a belt of-this character so constructed as to impart to the wearer a neat waist line and relatively straight front without any restraint being exerted thereby on the body in turning, bending, stooping or the like.

Another object is to so construct a belt of this character to furnish means for securing and supporting shirt waists, skirts, trousers, hose and the like.

Another object is to so construct a device of this character as to cause it to distribute pressure upon the hips of the wearer and prevent any disagreeable cutting into the flesh and which does not in any way interfere with the freedom of the motion of the body.

With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

In the embodiment illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, the girdle or belt 1 constituting this invention is shown constructed of a strip of webbing or woven belting 2 of a length greater than the circumference of the waist of the wearer for which it is designed, said n v Specification of Le'tters Patent. belts being made in different sizes in the same manner that corsets are, to fit different sized waist measures.

. One end of this strip 2 carries a buckle 3 with which its other end is designed to be detachably and adjustably engaged. (See Fig. 1.) 1

Buttons or other suitable fasteners 4: are preferably'carried by the strip 2 for the engagement by cooperating fasteners on the inside of the shirt waist band or dress skirt band. i

T he stiffening and supporting means for this girdle are constructed of what are known on the market as corset shields, and which are made in the form shown at 5, each including a longitudinally extending casing 6 having on opposite sides thereof alined pockets 7 in which are incased stiffening strips 8 of steel, whalebone, or the like, forming fingers or stems which extend transversely of the girdle and longitudinally of the wearer when applied. 7 These shields or sections 5 may have any desired number of fingers or stems, five being preferably used in each section.

The fingers or stems which are arranged on the upper side of the fabric strip 2 are made shorter than those on the lower side thereof and the fingers of each strip on the lower side decrease in length from the middle toward the ends of the strip as is shown clearly in Fig. 2, so that when these sections are applied to the strip 2, which is preferably accomplished by means of safety pins 9, the longer fingers will be positioned one at the center of the back of the wearer and others over the hips as is shown clearly in Figs. 1 and 3 to hold down the flesh at these points. The fingers on the lower side of the belt are preferably provided with fasteners 10 whichmay be in the form of snaps, buttons or the like, but which are designed to be connected to the bands of skirts when it is desired to attach them below the waist line. These fasteners 10 are here shown arranged on every other finger, although obviously they may be carried by every finger if found desirable.

From the above description it will be seen that a belt of this character is especially desirable ffor use by, short-waisted, stout women when it is found desirable for any reason to omit the corset and thereby conformtethe comfort er the wearer while at the sametirne enabling her to present a neat,
