, INVENTOR ATTOR N EY Patented Mar. 9, 1926.-
- UNITED STATES PATENT OF-FEIVCE.
IBRASSIERE.
I Applieationfiled December 16, 1924. Serial No. 756,302.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, (inmonVarr ALLEN HAVEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brassieres, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates to garments of the kind adapted to maintain and support the bust portion of the body, and consists of an article of one piece so constructed as to afford a convenient and comfortable means for maintaining the natural shape of the bust portion of the body.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 represents a front perspective view of a bras'siere in operative condition embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 represents a top perspective view thereof as it appears on the wearer;
Fig. 3 represents a back perspective View thereof; andv Fig. 4 represents a plan view thereof.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate the form my invention assumes, the numeral 1 represents the back portion of the brassiere to which is attached elastic bands 2 at each end thereof. The horizontal back port-ion 1 is made from any suitable cloth and extends across the back of the wearer, while the elastic bands 2 are made from wide flexible material and extend along the sides of the body unclerthe arms. The elastic bands provide a means for holding the brassiere in place and also for allowin a comfortable movement of the body. ttached to the elastic bands 2 and extending over the bust portion of the body are a pair of cup shaped front pieces 3 which are so shaped as to envelop and support the busts of the wearer. The front pieces 3 are provided with reenforced seams 4 which both maintain the original shape of the said pieces and serve to make them more durable. Each of the said pieces 3 is provided with gathered seams 5 which are sewed to the front pieces at the ends thereof where the seams 5 are gathered. The gathered seams 5 serve as a means for producing the required shape for the said pieces. To each of the front pieces 3, at the ends thereof where the seams 5 are gathered, is attached a strap 6 which is of approximately one and one half inches in' width and of sufficient length to extend across the front of the body and across the sides thereof to suitable fastening. devices 7, which are attached to the back portion 1, and are adapted to maintain and securely hold the ends of stra s 6 after they are connected to the devices. devices 7 may be ordinary buckles such as are used to securely hold the ends of a belt together, or any other suitable means ada t ed to accomplish the same purpose. To t 1e top edge of the front pieces 3 and to the top edge of back portion 1, are attached a pair I of straps 8 which extend over the shoulders of the wearer and serve to support the brassiere in its proper positionv The various parts of the brassiere as shown and described herein are attached tosecurely in place with the busts of the wearer thereby.
The brassiere herein shown and described is adapted to maintain the natural shape of the body, and particularly serves to support and maintain the bust portions of the body in such a manner as to produce results more satisfactory than do the garments now used.
Having described my invention and what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A brassiere, comprising a horizontal back portion having a. pair of buckles and a pair of elastic bands attached to its ends, a pair of cup-shaped front pieces attached to the elastic bands for supporting. enveloping and maintaining the natural shape ofv the busts of the wearer, and a pair of straps. attached to the ends of the front pieces, which said straps are adapted to cross each other properly enveloped and supported between the front pieces and engage with the buckles, whereby the said front pieces may be maintained in their proper positions on the wearer.
2. A brassiere comprising a horizontal back portion provided at its ends with a pair ofbuckles and a pair of elastic bands, the buckles being attached to the back portion. beneath the elastic hands, a pair of cupshaped front pieces secured to the elastic bands, the said front pieces being shaped to envelop the'busts of the wearer and maintain their natural form, and a. pair of straps attached to the ends of the front pieces, which said straps are adapted to cross eac other between the front pieces and engage with the buckles on the back portion, whereby the front pieces may be maintained in their proper position on the wearer.
GRACE VAN ALLEN HAVEN.
