J. B. HOFFMAN Feb. 6, 1951 BRASSIERE Filed Sept 26, 1949 Jessie B. Hoffman INVENTOR.
BY W Mzzq Patented Feb. 6,1951
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BRASSIERE Jessie B. Hoffman, Mirror Lake, Wash.
Application September 26, 1949, Serial No. 117,810
This invention relates to rbrassieres, and the principal object of the invention is to provideja brassiere which is very comfortable to wear, and which has breast cups that are so constructed as to support the breasts in a lifted position without pressing up and flattening them.
Another objectof the invention is to provide a neat brassiere of the above character which comprises simple parts of such form that garments of uniform quality may be economically and readily manufactured.
A further object is to provide a lorassire in which the binding force of the body bands is transmitted mainly to the upper portions of the breast cups so that the latter are effectively held up to comfortably support the breasts in lifted position without unduly pressing on the lower portions of the breasts.
The exact nature of the invention will become apparent from following description when considered with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a brassire embodying the present invention; I
Figure 2 shows in plan the separate parts which yield the major portion of the garment shown in Figure 1, when said parts are assembled;
Figure 3 is an enlarged vertical section through one of the breast cups in position on the body, the section being taken on the plane of the line 33 of Figure 1; and,
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevational vie showing the brassiere in position on the body.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the brassire consists of two similar breast cups 5 and 6 stitched together along thei inner edges as at 1 and having their upper portions a extended outwardly beyond their lowe portions b as at 0, body bands 8 and 9 stitched at ID to the respective extensions c, an elastic strap l I stitched at 12 to the free end of band 8 and carrying spaced hooks l3, an inelastic strap I4 stitched at I5 to the free end of band 9 and carryinglongitudinally spaced pairs of eyes It for selective engagement by the hooks l3 to secure the brassire in place at the back of the body, and wide shoulder straps I! attached to the tops of the breast cups and the body bands in the usual way. Each breast cup has a suitable lining e.
The lower portion of each breast cup consists of a plurality of similar longitudinally disposed elongated strips I8 having convex longitudinal edges overlapped and stitched together at I9, and a bottom similarly disposed strip 20 of similar length having a straight lower edge and a convex 1 Claim. (Cl. 2-42) upper edge which is overlapped upon and stitched at 2| to the lowest strip I 8. By joining the strips l8 and 20 along convex edges, this portion of the cup is given the desired concaved form.
The upper portion of each breast cu consists of upper and lower longitudinally disposed strips 22 and 23 having convex adjacent edges overlapped and stitched together at 24. The lower strip 23 has a convex edge overlapped upon and stitched to the adjacent edge of the uppermost strip I8 at 25, and the outer portion of strip 23 has a depending extension 26 provided with a curved inner edge d which is joined by the stitching at 25 to the outer ends of the strips l8 and 20 of the lower cup portion b. The outer end portions of the strips 22 and 23 project beyond the lower cup portion to provide the extensions 0 which are joined to the bands 8 and 9. Thus, the binding force of the bands 8 and 9 is transmitted mainly to the upper portions of the breast cups.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that the invention is such as to effectively attain the objects stated above. Minor changes in details disclosed herein are contemplated within the spirit of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A brassire including two similar breast cups stitched together along their inner edges and having their upper portions extended outwardly beyond their lower portions, and means to secure the cups in position on the wearer including body bands stitched to the outer ends of said upper portions, the lower portions of the breast cups comprising a plurality of longitudinally disposed elongated strips having convex longitudinal edges stitched together, the upper portions of the breast cups comprising upper and lower elongated strips having convex edges stitched together, the lower strips of said upper cup portions having depending extensions stitched to the outer ends of the strips of said lower cup portions.
