CORSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,847, dated June 14, 1881.
` Applicatiouniea June r1, leso. (Model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that, I, ELL S. SMITH, of Birmingham, county ot" New Haven, in the State ot Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the following is a full and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecitication.
In the drawings, Figure.l is a perspective View, showing n iy improved corset as it appears when in use. corset extended.
The invention relates to an improvement in that class of corsets in which the body is solid in front and has a broad vertical stay at that point, and open at the back andprovided with belts lapping around the waist of the corset and secured at the front, being a construction the object of which is to dispense with laces and hooks or clasps, and insure a better tit and greater comfort.
My improvementconsists in a corset having a body and beltin oneundetachable piece, the body closed in front and open behind, from each side of which opening the belt-pieces eX- tend, one end or piece of such belt being passed through a slotted stay at the rear, forward, and ndjustably secured in front to the other beltpiece, passed forward in the opposite direction, substantially as hereinalter described.
In thedrawings, Arepresents the body of a corset, which may be of any of the well-known forms, save that it is continuous across the front and not open, as usual; B B', the two belt-pieces; C, the wide single front stay; D D, the back stays; S, a long,r slot in the back stay, D, for the free end of one of the beltpieces topass through. O is a buckle on the end of one of the belt-pieces. Instead of a buckle, hooks or clasps may be used.-
In use my improved corset is applied to the person with the front stay, C, opposite theme- Fig. 2 shows the same4 tachable piece, the body closed in front and dian line of the chest and waist, and the free end of belt-piece B is carried around the back and passed through the slot S in the back stay, D, and brought-toward the center front and secured by the buckle O, which has been carried around in the opposite direction to the front.
There are many advantages in this construction, among which may be named, first, it does away with the necessity ot' lacing in the back and the use of hooks and clasps in front, thus making it very easy to put on or off; second, it is adjustable to the size of the waist, and can easily be made tigh ter orlooser aboutthe waist, as the wearer may wish, Without removing the corset from the person 5 third, the strain being all brought into the center of the corset by the zone or belt passing around outside, the upper and lower parts of the corset are left free to expand and adjust themselves to the shape of the wearer. These advantages, while incident in a measure, possibly, to some other constructions, are in my improvement combined in, it is believed, the best form.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a corset, a body and belt in one unde- 7o open at the rear, and the belt-pieces B B', eX- tending forward from the edges of such rear opening, in combination with a slotted back stay, D, through which one of the belt-pieces is adapted to be passed and he secured in front to the other piece, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the aboveimprovements in corsets I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of May, A. D. 1880.
