N-PEYERS, FHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDW'ARD P. BEACH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND FRED. C. MARTIN, OF SAME PLACE.
BRACELET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,138, dated March 22,1881.
Application filed February 4, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom t'tmay concern:
Beit known that I, EDWARD P. BEACH, of
Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a bracelet having a spring-joint to close it and keep it on the Wrist; and it consists in the construction of the hinge, substantially as herein set forth.
Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a detailed section, showing thejoint.
My bracelet is made with a spring-joint having two cylindrical sections, A B, abutting together, to which, respectively, the parts C of the bracelet are secured, so that a portion, D, of the end will be soldered to the section of the hinge, and a portion, E, be left loose to work and turn on the side of the abutting sec- .tion, making a guard for thejoint. A hollow arbor, F, for the hinge-sections to turn on, is made fast in one of them, A, and to turn loose in the other, terminating inside of the outer end. In this arbor is placed a coil or flat spring, Gr, having one end made fast in the outer end of section A, and the other, reaching beyond the arbor, is made fast in the outer end of section B, and this spring is set to draw the parts C of the bracelet together, and at the same time hold the sections A B together and prevent longitudinal displacement. This joint may be at right angle with the parts of the bracelet, as seen in Fig. 1,,or diagonally, as in Fig. 2. In the latter form there is an advantage in opening the bracelet in putting on or taking off, as the loose ends spread apart laterally as they are opened and allow them the better to pass the Wrists.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The bracelet having the joint composed of the sections A B, arbor F, and spring G, in combination with the parts C of the bracelet, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
EDWARD P. BEACH.
