To ALL wHoM 1r MAY ooNcEnN:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. MONTROSE, of the city ot' New York, and county and State of New York,
have invented a certain new and improved Fishing-Pole; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof.
My pole is a jointed pole, and can be adjusted in one-half the time consumed with the ordinary pole, and also does away the liability or even the possibility of losing or dropping a section in the act of putting it together. 'lhe invention is also intended to o bviate the diiliculties heretofore experienced in consequence of t .the liability of the ordinary jointed fishing-pole to pull apart in the act of ordinary iishing, or more especially in case of an entanglement of the line, so as to require a strong end-pull on the sections. The joints' are permanently connected together bya hinged joint, which is somade and defended as to be verystrong, and to allow the parts to be folded into a very compact condition.
I will first describe what I consider the best means of carrying out my invention, and will afterwards designate the points which I beli've to be new. The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents my entire pole in three lengths orlsections, folded.
Figure 2 is across-section on the line S S in iig. 1.
Figure 3 is one view of ajoint extended, but not stiffened."
Figure 4 is another view of the same.
Figure 5 shows the pole stiiened.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in all the figures.
'Iints are employed to aid in distinguishing parts, and 'do not indicate materials. The material of the wood parts may be ash. The material of the metallic p arts may be all brass, with or without silver plating or other ornamentation.' The drawings represent the novel parts, with so much of the ordinary parts as is necessary to indicate their 4relation thereto. It will be understood that my invention may be provided with any of the approved reels and other devices known to the craft. v
A is the woody portion of the butt or largest section. Al is a metallic ferrule, which defends the end against the liability cf being split or otherwise injured. B is a short link or hinged piece jointed to the piece A at one end by the rivet or pin bl, and to the second piece or section ofthe pole C by the rivet b2. The second section Cof the pole is protected at both ends by ferrules, as represented, and is jointed to the third section E' by the link or hinge-piece D and the pins dit?. The ends ofthe several pieces A, C, and E, are rounded, as represented, and are adapted to fit close together, as also to allow the sections to be folded upon each otherfas represented. t will be observed that the linked pieces B and Dare allowed to lie parallel to each other, and that the plane ofthe hinge-piece D is held at such an angle that when the several sections are folded, the section C does not lie exactly at the side of either the piece B, the piece 0,01' the piece A, but rather in thejoint, or opposite to the space between them. This allows the pole to be folded in a very compact form. When rthenumber of sections is increased the same principle oi construction may be carried further, so as to involveany number of sections, and the additional sections may be disposed relatively to the others, so as to form therewith the most compact shape, it being generally preferable to make a round bundle, or a bundle which.isslightlyilattcned, or
which is round en one side and at on Athe other.
I believe it unnecessary to point out all of the positions of the joints which will be required to effectfthcse several ends. I may suggest, howevei, that in order to make thebundle as nearly round as possible when thev parts are folded together, it may be rwell toextend thesinall endof the section E alittle beyond the sectionsy A and C, s0 that its link orhinge-piece may extend directly aerossthe ends of the previously-folded sections, this bringing the next and additional piece in the oppositcjoint or space on the other side of the sections and C. This condition of the parts is indicated in iig. I.
Having now fully 'described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is asifollows. l I l I claim a sectional 'fishing-pole, having the several sections A, B, C, Ste., permanently connected by hinged joints, constructed and arranged relatively to the sections and to each other, substantially as and so as to fold in the manner herein described.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES H. MONTROSE.
