IMPROVEMENT IN- EYEGLASSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,967, dated August 7, 1866.

To all whom it may concern? Be it known that I EDWARD MAYNARD, of Tarrytown, in the county of West-chester and State of New York, have invented a new and useful lmprovementin Frames for Eyeglasses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure l is a view, in perspective, of myimproved eyeglass-frame; Fig. 2, a top-edge view thereof when opened; Fig. 3, a similar I view with the frame closed; Fig. 4, an enlarged partial view, illustrating the mode of pivoting the bow and the arrangement of my improved stay or nose piece thereon; Fig. 5, a section in the line as a; of Fig. 3, showing more clearly the form and attachment of said stay-piece; and Fig. 6, a view of a different mode ofopera-ting the nose or stay piece.

The nature of my invention consists in the combination of a central stay or nose piece with the bow of an eyeglass-frame, which shall project from said bow when it is opened, and, resting upon the wearers nose, thus prevent the glasses from tipping forward.

The frames for the eyeglasses in this my invention are best connected by a bow jointed in the center thereof, the two halves a a of the bow being pivoted together so as to fold or swing over, as seen in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The ends of these two halves a a of the bow terminate in circular plates, which are superimposed upon, so as to coincide with, each other, and are thus secured by a central pivot-pin, forming the joint. With this joint so formed I combine a slender strip or nosepiece, b, of

metal, so that it shall also be held by and move upon the central pivot-pin of the joint. (See Fig. 5.)- This nose-piece bis so bent or curved, as seen in Figs. 1 and 5, as to reach and rest upon the wearers nose when the eyeglasses are in position thereon.

Shoulders are formed upon the periphery of the circular joint, so as to leave, when the frame is opened wide, a recess centrally at a point on said periphery equidista-nt from the bows just large enough to embrace the rear end, I), of the nose-piece, which is bent up to fit thereinto, as shown in Fig. 2. These shoulders allow the bow to close only over the nose-piece, which is thus embraced and inclosed between them when they are closed, as seenin Fig. 4. Upon opening one side or the other of the frame, the shoulder upon that side of thejoint striking against the rear end of the nose-piece, as indicated in red, Fig. 4, will cause it to swing around with it until the frame, being fully open, this rest will extend out at a right angle thereto in its proper position for resting upon the nose, as seen in Fig. 2.

I contemplate insuring the adjustment of the nose-piece in its proper position by means of cogged segments 0 0 upon each end of the two divisions of the bow, these divisions being each pivoted separately to the nose-piece, so as that when opened the nose-piece must necessarily extend out therefrom at right angles thereto, all as'clearly illustrated in Fig.6; and it is obvious that many other ways of attaching a nose-piece to the frame of eyeglasses may be used, varying with the kind of frames employed.

I contemplate, also, the combination of the nose-piece with the spring-bow of eyeglasses when the bow is made in one piece, in which case 1 pivot the nose-piece thereto so as that it may be folded back over or under said bow.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A stay or nose piece, in combination with the frame of eyeglasses, substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein set forth.
