Description

(No Model.)
J. Z. GIPFORD.
PACKING BAND. No. 254,635 Patented Mar 7,1882.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN Z. GIFFORD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PACKING-BAND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 254,635, dated March 7, 1882,
Application filed August 20, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Z.GIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residin g at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Packing-Bands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement on the packing-band described in Letters Patent 0f the United States granted to me September 28, 1880, No. 232,704; and it consists in combining with the double hook and the longitudinal slots one or more inwardly-projectin g re-enforcehooks near the ends of the band, having the double hook and eyes near the opposite end of the band for the reception of the re-enforce hooks. In those portions of the band next inward from the re-enforee hooks and outward from theeyes areformed cavities adapted to each other, and one adapted to the re-enforce hooks,in order toleave the interior of the band approximately plain.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the end portions of the band in perspective view. Fig. 2 is alongitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 is a planor top view of the same.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
The letter A designates the body of the band, having a double hook, B B, at one end, and longitudinal slots 0 0 near its opposite end, the length of the slots being equal to the aggregate width of the double hook to allow its insertion therein, as fully described in my before-mentioned Letters Patent.
D D are the re-enforce hooks, and E E the eyes for their reception. One or more of these re-enforce hooks D D and eyes E E may be used, and the hooks are formed near that end of the band having the double hook B B-as by striking up the metal composing the band in a suitable manner-while the eyes are formed or cut out near the opposite endof the band. The re-enforce hooks D D project in an inner direction both from the end of the band and from its body, and when the double hook B B has been adjusted in the slots 0 C said hooks (No model.)
will enter and engage the eyes E E, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, if the band is lengthened or extended, and it will be seen that by their means the strength and durability of the band is materiallyincreased. Those portions of the band next to the reenforce hooks D D in an inner direction, and next to the eyes E E in an outer direction, are swaged or pressed outward to form the cavities ff, the cavities f being next to the hooks and being adapted to receive in them the backs of the cavities f, while the latter are adapted to receive in them the ends of the re-enforee books. When the re-enforce hooks DD are inserted in the eyes E E the cavities f enter the cavities f, and the re-ent'orce hooks enter the cavitiesf, and in this manner the interior of the band is left approximately plain or free of projections, so that when it is placed on a package-such as a bucket or cask-- it can be shifted or drawn to any part thereof, like an ordinary hand, without obstruction.
The cavities ff are preferably rounded, in contradistinetion to being made fiat, to avoid cracking the metal composing the band, and the eyes E are made of sufficient width to allow for imperfect cutting, so that the books may enter therein without diffieulty.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A packing band constructed with the double hook B B, the longitudinal slots 0 O. the re-enforce hooks D D, (one or more,) and the eyes E E, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
2. A packing band constructed with the double hook B B, the longitudinal slots 0 C, the re-enforce hooks D D, (one or more,) the eyes E E, and the cavities ff, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof 1 have hereunto set my hand and seal in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN Z. GIFFORD.
