MIRROR-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 253,457, dated February 7, 1882.
Application filed November 8, 1881. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER WIEDERER, a citizen of the German Empire, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mirror-Handles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the construction of the handles of mirrors, and especially that class of handles eomposedof a bent wire sprung into an eye on the back of the mirror to swing therein, adapting the handle to be folded against such back when not in use, and also to act as a brace for sustaining the mirror on a suitable stand.
My invention consists in the combination of the eye for attachment to the back of the mirror, provided with notches at its opposite ends, those at one end alternating with those at the other end, and the wire handle sprung into the eye and provided with pins or projections adapted to automatically engage the notches of the eye.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the handle applied to a mirror as it appears when used as a brace. thereof, partly insection. Fig. 3 shows the eye in perspective view. Fig. 4. shows the blank used to form the eye.

The letterA designates the mirror, B the wire handle, and (J the eye. The wire composing the handle B is bent to the proper shape, and is sprung into the eye 0 at both ends, as shown inFig. 2, the parts entering the eye being rectilinear and forming a joint with the eye, upon which the handle swings as an axis. The eye 0 is formed by a strap or plate, 0, which is the part to be attached to the mirror. In the eye 0 are, formed notches d, which are located at the ends thereof, and the handle B is provided with pins or projections e, adapted Fig. 2 is a detail view to automatically engage said notches. When the handle is swung to the required position the pins or projections 0 fall into or engage either of the notches d, and thereby retain the handle in its adjusted position and hold it from accidental displacement. The pins or projections are permitted to spring out of the notches in the movements of the handle by the inherent elasticity of the latter. The no'ches cl are so formed at the ends of the eye 0 that those at one end alternate with those at the other end, as shown, so that the least number of notches is required at either end, one of the pins being brought in play alternately with the other, while that pin which remains out of play, impinging against a plain portion of the eye, tends to expand the handle, and thus increases its pressure on the other pin catching the notch. This arrangement of the notches is an important feature of my invention.
I am aware thataswinging handle has been held by shoulders or ledges on the back of the mirror receiving the handle between them, and I do not claim such as my invention.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, substantially as herelnbefore set forth, of the eye for attachment to the back of the mirror, provided with notches at its opposite ends, those at one end alternating with those at the other end, and the wire handle sprung intothe eye and provided with pins or projections adapted to automatically engage the notches of the eye, for the purpose set forth.
