ntell ,tatee JOHN BARCL'AY, OF BERGEN, NEW'JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 107,588, dated Sqtcmbcr 20, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN BRACELETS.
. dns-p The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
invented anew and useful Improvement in Bracelets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will .enable those skilled in the art to make and use the,
same, reference ybeing had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specitication, in which draw-l ing-g Figure l represents a horizontal section of this in- Figurc 2 is a. side view of the same, showing the latch.
.. Figure 3 hinge.
Similar' letters indicate corresponding parts.
I This invention relates particularly to bracelets made is a similar view ofthe same, showing the of horn or other material which is not capable of sustaining a hinge-joint anda clasp or fastening of the construction usually employed on bracelet-s of' meta-l or other stout material.
The joint which I use is composed of a flat link, which extends over the oblique cut, separatingvthe two halves of the bracelet at thev joint, and which is fastened to one-halt' of the bracelet by a rivet passing through it and by a pin inserted between its back edge and the inner end ofthe kerfin the bracelet, while its outer end is connected to the other half of thepbracelet by a pivot which allows of opening and closing the bracelet. The fastening which connects the two loose. ends of thc two halves ofthe bracelet, when Vthe same is closed, consists of an S-shaped latch, -which is pivoted to one-half, and catches over a pin inserted in the other half of the bracelet.
In the drawing- The letter A designates a bracelet, which is made, by preference, of horn, and which is composed of two halves, B C, which are separated at one end by an oblique ont, a, and at the opposite end by a radial cut, b.
Transversely across the oblique 'out a extends a kerl', c, to some distance into the end of each half of the bracelet, and this kerf is intended to receive aat link, d, which forms the connection between the tivo halves B C.
This flat link is fastened to one-half C by a rivet, e, and it is further-steadied by a pin, f, inserted between its backedgc and the inner end ofthe kerf, as shown in g. l.. This pin is, by preference, made of metal, and also serves to fill up any crevice which might exist between the back edge of the link and the inner end of the ker', and whichfwhen not lled up, would mar the appearance and finish of 'the` article. ,r pin should be omitted, the link al would be liable to work loose in a short time, but, by means of this pin, it can be readily made tight, and it', in the course of time, it should` work loose, it can 'be readily tightl ened by inserting a new pin, slightly larger than the first.
The outer end ot' the link'd is rounded off, and it enters the kel-t' in the part B of the bracelet, being connected to the same by means of a pivot, g, on which it swings, so that the part B can be readily swung open or closed, as may be desired. A By these means a joint is obtained which can be readily applied tohorn or other comparatively soft or brittle material, and which is firm and durable and produces a good finish.
When the bracelet is closed its loose ends are fastened together by an Ssha-pcd latch, h, bestrseen in tie. 2. This latch extends across the radial cnt b,'and it is pivotedto onehalf of the bracelet and madeto catch over a pin, i, inserted in the other half.
A small projection or thumb-piece, iattached to the latch allows of' operating the same withease andA facility.
A pin, k, which is secured in the open end of onehalt', B, ,and-which drops .in asocket in the open end of the other half', C, serves to retain said open ends in the proper relation toward cach other when thc bracelet is closed.
What I claimv as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. Abracelet, made of horn or other soft or brittle material, and having its two halves united by a flat link, d, rivet c, pin j, and pivot g, substantially in themanner described.
y 2. The S-shaped latch h, in combination with the v bracelet A, as set forth.
This specilication signed by me this 11th day of August, 1870. y
JOHN BARCLAY.
Witnesses I W. HAUFF, E. F. KASTENHUBER.
