IMPROVEMENT IN SCUTTLE FASTENINGS.

I, THOMAS J. GIFFORD, o'f Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Scottie-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved mode of fastening scuttlcs, so arranged that the scnttle may be opened to diierent heights and fastened; and, also, when closed, will automatically fasten itself.

Figure 3 is a horizontal sect-ion, showing the sliding band or staple, with springs attached, and stationary catch'. Y.

Figure 4 is a horizontal, and A Figure 5 aveitical elevation of the part attached to the scnttle, and to which the curved bar is attached.

The four principal parts are composed of malleableiron, or other suitable material, and consist- First, of a piece, A, with two ears, to which the curved bar is hinged;

Second, the curved bar B, which is' made of suitable length, having'a number of notches cut' in the edge, which rub against the stationary catch;

Third, the catch O, which is attached to the window-frame, and has a projection which ts into the notches in the curved bar; and

Fourth, the sliding staple D which encircles the curved bar and slides in two holes in the stationary catch, and has a spiral spring, F, upon each end.

The operation is as follows:

When the scuttle is to be raised the end of the curved bar is drawn from the catch and raised as desired, the springs upon the staple keeping the bar in any position placed.

When the scuttle is closed the notch in the bar is so placed as to fit the catch and securely fasten it.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim- In combination with the hinged frame, the curved and notched bar B, stationary catch C, and Ushaped sliding bar D, with springs F F, the bar B passing through the bar D and acting as a guide for the same,

all as set forth.
