HAMSON H. HESKETT AND MARCUS n. FERGUSON, or MCLEAN COUNTY,
ILLINOIS. j
Letters Patent No. 99,086, dated January 25, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CCIVIBINED BASE-KNOB AND DOOR-FASTENER The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To whom it may concern Be it known that we, HAMsoN H. Hnsxnr'r and MARCUS E. FERGUSON, of the county of McLean, and State of Illinois, have invented a ne vv' and useful device for securing doors in an Open position, and, combined therewith, a new and useful improvement on the device for protecting the fastening, 82e., against the knobs, and also preventing the concussion and cousequent jarring of the door against the wall, in the act of opening the same, which we designate an Elastic Base-Knob and Fastener; and we do hereby declare that the following is a clear, full, and exact description of the construction and Operation of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a front elevation, with door closed;
Figure 2, a side view, with door open and catched; and
Figure 3, a longitudinal central section through cylinders A and B.
Our invention' consists in combining, with a stationary cylinder and spring-catch, a sliding cylinder', so that the sliding cylinder will cover the spring-catch when actuated by a spiral spring.
Cylinder A is cast with a ange for screw-holes, for the purpose of fastening it against the base-board, and having the reverse or outer end open.
Cylinder B is made to slide loosely over the other, and having the Outer end closed, except a small aperture to allow it to passoverthe catch d, when thrown back by the force of the door, and is intended as a protection and coveringto said spring-catch.
This spring-catch d is fastened permanently at the centre of, and within the small cylinder A, and, in connection with an adjustable catch c, fastened to the door, serves to hold it in an Open position. The catch e is attached to the door, andis made adjustable, by means of a slot for the lower screw, for the purpose Of-changing it, so that the spring-catch d escapes it or not, whereby to convert the device into a simple' baseknob, or knob and fastener combined, as desired.
The cylinder B, in conjunction with the spiral'spring d, placed within the cylinder', constitutes the elasticity which is requisite to prevent the concussion and consequent jarring when the door is thrown open against the wall. This cylinder B is secured, and prevented from being thrown Oii` by force .of 'che spiral spring d', by a small pin, c, attached to the spring-catch d, the said cylinder having a slot for that purpose, as Well also for its Own backward and forward movement. The pin c also serves the purpose of disengaging the springcatch from the door, simply by pressing the foot against it.
What we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A 1. The combination of the stationary cylinder A, sliding cylinder B, spiral spring d, springcatch d, and pin c, all constructed substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. The combination of the stationary cylinder A, sliding cylinder B, spiral spring d, spring-catch d, pin c, and adjustable catch c, allconstructed substantially as and for the purposes described.
