1 Claim.
This invention relates to beam clamps and more particularly to a beam clamp adapted to lift beams Without the aid of a sling. Where steel is piled in mass and a sling is used each individual piece must be raised and blocked up in order to use the sling.
An object of this invention is to provide a device which may be used to lift individual pieces of steel such as structural steel channels, I beams and similar flanged bodies. It may also be used to lift T-beams and numerous other items.
Another object of my invention is to provide a clamp which will not only more simply lift and carry beams of the type described but which will automatically release itself whenever desired. Other objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent as the description proceeds.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a beam clamp embodying my invention grasping both flanges of an I beam.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my device used to lift the beam where it is used as an ordinary clamp.
Fig. 3 is a view showing my clamp attached to the flanges of a beam to employ torque action.
Fig. 4 is a 'side elevation of my clamp.
Fig. 5 is a top view thereof.
My clamp l consists essentially of a ring member II, two arms 12 and I4 each having jaw sections l and [6. The jaw sections l5 and [6 are provided with hook members I! and I8 and slots I9 and 20. The inner surfaces of the slots l9 and 20 may be provided with steel ridge 2| and 22 which may be welded into place or formed in the jaws. Where it is desirable to make ridges of tougher material they may be welded into place and if worn out burned off and replaced. The ring ll engages apertures 24 and 25 in the respective arms l2 and I4.
As shown in Fig. 2, my device may be used as an ordinary clamp with the hooks I1 and I8 engaging the web 38 of a beam or as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 with the jaws engaging two flanges 3| and 32 of the beam 33. In placing the hooks the arms I2 and I4 are oii'set so that the jaws do not engage the beam at directly opposite points. As the chain 34 is tightened this causes a torque action in the direction of the arrows 35 and 3 3 and causes the jaws to grip the beam tighter between the ridges Zl and 22 and to lift it.
It will be appreciated that many different types of articles may be lifted by my clamp and that its uses are manifold. Due to the torque action secured, it is not necessary to get under the beam and the grip will be increased as the weight of the object is likewise increased.
I claim:
A beam clamp comprising a pair of arms connected by a ring, hooks on said arms, slots in said arms adapted to engage the flanges of a beam in offset relationship whereby said ring exerts a torque action on said arms.
IRVING DIAMOND.
