BUCKLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 231,603, dated August 24, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

West Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention consists in the combination, in a double buckle, of two hows, the ends of one of which are bent outward to form teeth for acting in conjunction with the other bow, and the ends of the otherof which are closed around the first-mentioned bow to secure the two together, and teeth made separate from either bow and closed around the firstmentioned bow, for acting in conjunction therewith, whereby a simple double buckle is produced comprising only three pieces, and either of which two buckles may be manipulated with the same facility as a single buckle.

The invention also relates to certain details of such construction.

In the accom panying-drawin gs, Figure 1 represents, upon an enlarged scale, a face view of one side of a double buckle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents, upon the same scale, a similar view of the other or reverse side thereof; and Fig. 3 represents a side view of such buckle constructed so that the teeth of the two buckles close upon opposite s des of their bows.

Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.

'Aand B designate the two bows ofthe double buckle, one of which, B, constitutes the tongue of the other buckle, being provided with the teeth a, formed by bending its ends outward, for acting in conjunction with the bow A. Theseparts, so far as described, differ in no way from an ordinary-form of single buckle, like that, for example, shown in Letters Patent "No. 13,218, granted July 10, 1855.

b designates the teeth of one buckle, which act in conjunction with the bow B, and which are here formed in one piece with a tongue, C, but which might be attached to the buckle separately, if desirable. This tongue, like the tongue and bow B, may be, and preferably is,

constructed of wire, as when so constructed no metal is wasted in the manufacture, and, as

here shown, the said tongue 0 is secured in place by being bent to form loops 0, which are secured to the tongue B by being closed around the same upon the outside of the teeth a, between said teeth and the ends (I of the bow A, which are closed around the tongue portion of the bow B to hold it in place.

As here represented, the teeth a close upon one side of the bow A, while the teeth I) close upon the opposite or reverse side of the bow B. This construction enables the two portions D of a single strap, or of two straps, to pass each other, one outsidethe other, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, and although here illustrated only in connection with a buckle of my improved construction, this feature of arranging the teeth of a double buckle to close upon opposite sides of the ho ws is applicable to double buckles of other construction.

By my invention I enable a double buckle to be formed from a single buckle by simply securing thereto the tongue C, provided with teeth b; and this method of construction is very desirable,inasmuch as the principal portions of the double buckle may be formed by the same tools used to shape and connect the parts of a single buckle.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a double buckle, the combination of two bows, the ends of one of which are bent outward to form teeth for acting in conjunction with the other how, and the ends of the other of which are closed around the first-mentioned bow to secure the two together, and teeth made separate from both bows, also closed around said first-mentioned bow for acting in con j unction therewith, substantially as specified.
