Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS STERNE, or Lonnon, ENGLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BUCKLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,813, dated October 13, 1874; applicatipn filed July 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs STERNE, of London, England, engineer, have invented or discovered a certain new and useful Improvement in Buckles or Fastenings and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs and to the letters and figures marked thereon; that is to say-- My invention consists in fitting in the frame of the buckle a slotted bar which is free to slide in the frame in a line with the points. At each end of its travel the points are covered or protected by one side or the other of the said bar. The free end of the strap or band to be buckled or fastened is passed through the slot of the bar, and as this end is pulled in a direction from the points it causes the bar to slide so as to leave the slot clear of the points; and as soon as the strap has been pulled to the desired degree of tightness and is let go the slotted bar slides up the points, carrying the strap with it, so that the points pass through and hold the strap securely.
My improved buckle will be fully understood on reference to the annexed drawings, Figure l of which shows the buckle closed, while Fig. 2 shows it open.
a is the frame of the buckle, and b b are the points aflixed to the crossbar c. d is a bar with a slot, 0, and free to slide in a line with the points 11 to an extent limited at one end by the cross-bar c and at the other by the stops f f. The bar 01 has apertures, as indicated by dotted lines at each side of the slot, to receive the points I) b.
One end of the strap or band being permanently attached, in the ordinary manner, to the buckle, the free end is passed through the slot 6, while the same is clear of the points b b, as in Fig. 2 5 and as soon as the strap has been pulled to the desired degree of tightness the elasticity or stress of the strap causes the bar 01 to slide up the points I) to the position seen in Fig. 1, carrying the strap with it, so that the points pass through the strap and hold it securely.
What I claim, and desire -to secure by Letters Patent, is
l The sliding bar d, with slot or opening 0,111
combination with frame wand pins 1) 12, sub-' stantially as described.
In Witness whereof I, the said LOUIS STERNE, have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of June, 187 4.
L. STERNE.
Witnesses:
