' SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 227,817, dated May 18, 1880.

To all whom it may. concern Be it known that I, OHAs. F. MosMAN, of West Meriden, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Coffin-Handle Sockets; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying draw- Y -ing`s and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of l scribed, and particularly recited in the claim.
A, the base of the socket, may be of any desired shape or style, preferably so as to expose a raised edge, a. In the center is thesocket B, or place Where the handle-lever is hinged. Around the socket and onto the base a ring, C, of Wood or any suitable material, is placed and preferably secured by the same screw which secures the socket to the coffin,
as shown. The shape ofthe ring will, of 3o course, correspond to the style of the base and socket, (here represented as a circular ring.) The ring is preferably colored black by varnishing, japannin-g, or otherwise. This o'ifers a strong contrast with the silver finish of the surrounding portions, and produces a pleasing effect. It may be of any desirable color, and being made independent of the socket or metal portion, it does not interfere with the plating,and is very cheaply produced, adding little or nothing to the expense of the article.
I claim.-
A cofn-handle socket wprovided with an independent ring, C, of wood or other material on the base, and surrounding the socket proper, but forming no part thereof, substantially as described.
