11 Claims.
The present invention relates to hair-dressing tools, and is more particularly directed toward disappearing combs with or Without devices for vsupporting a hairpin to facilitate making of curls.
The present invention contemplates an inexpensive form of hair-dressing tool having both the regular comb adapted for heavy duty when combing the head of hair, and a small disappearing comb carried in the element which forms the handle for the first-mentioned comb as well as a mandrel, so that one can use the same tool for either combing the hair, or forming the coil.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair-dressing tool having a disappearing comb adapted to be manually shifted from the projected to the retracted positions and locked in with position and having a spring bearing on the back of the insert to hold the insert in the outer or projected position, the disappearing comb insert being completely removable for cleaning.
A further object of the invention is to provide a hair-dressing tool having a disappearing comb and wherein the body member, which forms a mandrel for winding the coil of hair, has a short extension with associated means for holding a hairpin in such a position while the coil of hair is being wound that it can be pushed toward the coil and spread so as to receive the coil When slid off the end of the mandrel.
A further object of the present invention is to provide an insert for disappearing combs having a reinforcement which prevents the insert from bending out of shape owing to the pressure of the spring below it.
Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The accompanying drawing shows, for purposes of illustrating the present invention, two of the many embodiments in which the invention may take form, it being understood that the drawing is illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the same.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view with parts in elevation showing a hair-dressing tool having both forms of comb, the disappearing comb being shown in tWo positions;
Figure Z is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating a form of construction having in addition the means for supporting a hairpin, the hairpin being in position to allow winding the coil of hair;
Figure 3 is a top elevational view of the structure shown in Figure 2;
Figure 4 is a view 'illustrating the coil of hair wound on the hair-dressing tool, the hairpin pushed in and spread and a modified form of release for securing the disappearing comb against removal;
Figure 5 is a transverse sectional View on the line 5-5 of Figure 2 at an enlarged scale;
Figure 6 is a transverse sectional view at an enlarged scale taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 2;
Figure 7 is a cross section on theline 'I-'I of Figure 1; and
Figure 8 is a sectional view of the securing device of Figure 4.
The hair-dressing tool shown in a body member IU formed of suitable material. The end I0a has a series of heavy strong teeth II to form a comb for combing the hair, while the other end Illb of the body member is of generally rectangular cross section and has a longitudinally extending slot I2 which terminates near the end of the body member. The extreme end of the slot I2 has two longitudinally extending openings I3 and I4. The body member carries a transversely extending pin I5.
A movable insert I6 is received in the slot I2. This insert has a backing part Il, and a series of comb teeth I8. It has a pin-like extension I9 at the end of the backing and a thumb piece 20 opposite a laterally extending slot 2| which opens rearwardly so that the insert can be easily inserted or removed. The slot has short branches 22 and 23 and the parts are so spaced that the insert can be shifted longitudinally and laterally so that the selected slot in the insert passes along the pin I5. The comb insert is urged outwardly by a spring indicated at 24 and is normally kept in place by engagement of the pin I9 with the element 25 on the body member and by the engagement of the right-hand end 26 with an overlying spring 21. This spring carries a button 28 in a notch 29 so that the spring can be bent back as indicated in dotted lines (Figure 3) to release the insert.
Owing to the smallness of the parts and the application of springV pressure to the backing I1 of the insert, it is desirable to reinforce this backing by providing some form of metal stiffener as shown at 29 in Figure 7. The stiffener may be secured during the molding operation or mechanically. When the insert, is in the position shown in Figure 1, the comb teeth are below the surface of the mandrel forming element Ib and the insert is held in this position by the pin-like extension I9 in the lower opening I3 and by the pin-like extension I5 entering the branch` 23 of the slot. Shifting the insert to the right will disconnect these interlocking connections and the Figure 1 has spring will force the insert out to the dot-anddash line position of Figure 1 which is the full line position of Figure 2. The insert can then be slid to the left, as shown in Figure 2, and the parts again interlocked so that the insert will not be pressed down while the tress of hair is being combed out.
In the arrangement shown in Figures 2 to 5, inclusive, the parts above described are also employed. The body member, however, has a short extension 30 to which is secured a sheath 3|, for example, by a hollow rivet such as shown at low the lower part of the extension 3]V as indicated at 33. The extensionY also supports a spring 34 which is adapted to be bent when the shank 35 of a hairpin 36 is inserted. When the parts are in the position shown in Figures 2 and 3, the tress of hair can be combed out and the coil started. The disappearing comlb is then pushed back into the body member and `locked in position and after the tress has been completely Wound' on the mandrel the hairpin. can be pushed from the position shown in Figures 2 and 3 from the position shown in Figure 4 where it is spread and in, a position. .to receive the coil of hair as it is pushed off the mandrel.
An alternative form of securing device for the end of the insert is shown at 31, Figures 4 and 8.
It is obvious that the invention may be embodied in many forms and constructions withinthe scope of the yclaims and I wish it to be understood that the particular forms shown are but a few of the many forms'. Various modications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any way with respect thereto.
