- 12 Claims. iCl.'132-33) The present invention relates to hair-dressing tools, and is more particularly directed toward hair-dressing tools embodying a disappearing comb carried in a casing or body member for lateral movement only, so asto be exposed for combing and curling the hair, or confined within the slot so that a coil of hair may be slidaoly re-' moved.

The disappearing comb member which moves laterally of the. slot is urged outwardly by a spring and held against accidental removal.

According to the present invention suitable means is provided whereby upon pressing the insert or comb member toward the bottom of the slot it is automatically locked in the housed position so that the wound coil of hair may be freely removed. i This locking means is designed to be readily releasable so that the spring acting on the comb member will force it to the exposed position and yieldingly hold it there while the hairis being curled and combed.

The accompanying drawing shows, for purposes of illustrating the present invention, three of the 'many embodiments in which the invention may it being understood that the drawing is illustrative of the invention rather than limiting the. same.

In the form of construction shown in Figures 1 and,2.the body or case is indicated at [0. It may have comb teeth Illa. on the handle end,

if desired. It is provided'with a longitudinally extending slot i I which opens toward the upper side of the case, as will be obvious from the drawing. This slotxisadapted to receive a disappearing comb member or insert l2 having comb teeth l3 and a finger-piece M. Immediately under the center of thefinger-pie'ce the insert isprovided witha key-hole opening i5 having a small diameter portion It, at the bottom and a large diameter portion H5" at the top.

The insert is urged laterally toward the exposed position bya leaf spring indicated at 20. In the exposed position of Figure 1 the tip 2! of the insert engages with an overhanging element 22 on the case, and the bottom of the opening l5 engages the plunger l8.

When one presses the insert down with the finger to the dotted line position of Figure 1, the bent spring 20 engages the lower face of the inplunger and hence there is no tendency for the insert to twist or turn about the plunger i8. As soon as the insert is pushed'far enough down to cause the large diam? eter part l5" of the opening l5 to be opposite the large diameter part I8" of the plunger l8, the spring l9 acts to cause these parts to engage and lock. The teeth are effectively held inside the caseso that the coil of hair may be readily removed. When pressure is applied on the end'of the plunger it is moved back to release the insert so that it returns to projected position. The

In the device shown in Figure 3 the case or body except that it is here shown as being provided with laterally extending bosses 3| and 32 through which the holes 33 and 34 extend. The plunger 35 has a large diameter portion'3ii' and a small diameter portion 35", as indicated, the larger portion passing through the hole 33 and the smaller portion passing through the hole 34. The

' end of the plunger has a. button 36, and a spring 3! acts to urge the plunger to the right as shown in the drawing. In this case the insert or comb member has a laterally extending opening 38 in which the large diameter portion, indicated at 39, extends to the middle of the insert.- When looked at from one side the opening .38 will mere- 1y be a long opening withrounded ends, while at the other or left side, as shown in the drawing, the opening will have a keyhole contour.

With thisarrangement the spring 31 will be housed in-the recess 40 when the insert is in the exposed position and the end'of the plunger will be' accessible for manipulation.

- The opening 38' and the connecting larger opening 33 form what may be called a semi-keyhole opening inthatthe enlarged. part 39 does not go all the way'through to the other side. The enlarged part 35' of the plunger ,.under the influence of spring 31, snaps into opening 39 and locks the comb in retracted position. Plunger 52 passes through slot in the comb 53 and through hole 56 in one side of casing 50. The locking eflfect of plunger 52 is eflfected by portion 52a snapping into the enlarged portion 55a formed at the top of slot 55, under the infiuence of spring 54 which presses the plunger toward locking position. The enlargement 55a at the top of slot 55 forms a semi-keyhole slot which cooperates with 52a in the same way that enlargement 35 in Fig. 3 cooperates with the portion 39 of the semi-keyhole slot 38, 39.

In Fig. 4 the plunger is shown in retracted and locked position, with enlargement 52a engaged in the enlarged portion 55a. of the slot, thereby hOldn ing the comb locked. When it is desired to unlock the comb, the finger is pressed against the end of plunger 52, against the pressure of spring 54, to disengage 52a from 55a, and the comb is then moved outwardly to projectedposition .by spring 20 as before.

Fig. 5 illustrates an alternative form of keyhole-shaped opening in the insert, for use when it is desired to provide a positive locking means to maintain the insert in the projected position. Instead of an enlarged opening at only one end, two enlarged openings 50 and GI, joined by a slot 62 whosewidth is less than the diameter of openings and GI. Opening 6i cooperates withthe plunger to lock the comb in projected position, while opening 60 cooperates with the plunger to lock the comb in retracted position.

The single keyhole slot I5 of Figs. 1 and 2, and ,38 of Fig. 3 and 53 of Fig. 4 may be changed into the double keyhole slotarrangement of Fig. 5 simply by providing the just mentioned single keyhole slots which are enlarged at one end, with the same kind of enlargements at the other end. Thereby the comb of any of the modifications may belocked inprojected as well as retracted positions.

It is obvious that the invention may be embodied in many forms and constructions within the scope of the claims and'I wish it to be understood that the particular forms shown are but Various modifications and changes being possible, I do not otherwise limit myself in any way with respect thereto.

What isclaimed is:

1, A hair-dressing device comprising a body or a longitudinally extending, laterally opening comb receiving slot, a comb member there are provided movable laterally of the slot so as to be-exposed or to be housed within the slot so that a poll of hair may be slidably removed, a spring urging the comb member to the exposed position, aplunger slidably carried by the body and extending transversely of the 'slot therein and having a portion of relatively small cross section and a portion of larger cross section, the comb member a laterally elongated opening through which the plunger passes and provided with a portion or a size to admit the smaller cross section portion of the plunger and a portion to admit only the larger portion of the plunger, and a spring urging the larger portion of the plunger toward the opening to lock the comb member in position when it en- ;ters the larger portion or the opening.

4. A hair-dressing device such as claimed in claim 1, wherein the elongated opening is directly opposite a finger-piece so that pressure is applied in the direction of elongation of the opening.

-5. A hair-dressing device such as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plunger has parts of two diameters and the'opening has a narrow portion and a large diameter portion. v

6. A hair-dressing device such as claimed in claim 1, wherein the portion of .the opening to admit the larger cross section portion of the plunger extends partially across the comb member.

7.'A hair-dressing device such as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plunger has a shoulder hearing against the side face of the comb member when in the projected position to press the other side face of the insert against the ,wall of the slot in the case to increase the friction between the parts and resist inward sliding of the comb member.

8.-A hair-dressing tool comprising a slottedv case, a comb member extending longitudinally of the slot, guides whereby the comb member may be moved laterally of the slot to projected position with the teeth of the comb member exposed or to retracted position .with the teeth housed in the slot, a spring carried by the case and urging the combmember to projected position, and a spring actuated locking device forautomatically member in retracted position spring to restore the comb member to projected position. l x

9. A hair-dressing tool comprising a slotted case, a comb member extending longitudinally of the slot, guides whereby the comb member may be moved laterally of the slot to projected position with the teeth of the comb member exposed or to retracted position with the teeth housed in the slot, a spring carried by the .case and urgingthe comb member to projected position, the comb member having a key-hole opening, a transversely extending plunger having a small diameter por that position, said locking device being manually releasable to permit the first tion extending through the opening and a large adapted to enter the large dithe opening, and a spring urgdiameter portion ameter-portion of ing the large diameter portion of the plunger.
