Abstract

1,213,322. Hand tufting appliances. M. JEANDUPEUX-PELLATON and P. BOEHLER. 29 March, 1968 [31 March, 1967], No. 15310/68. Heading D1G. Apparatus for securing a length of tuft yam to a base fabric comprises a first unit having yarn pulling means movable through the fabric, a second unit movable relative to the first unit, latch means normally preventing relative movement between the first and second units, and means, actuated by engagement of the fabric by a member when the pulling means has passed through the fabric, for releasing the latch means to permit said relative movement, whereby ends of said yarn length carried by the first unit are pushed by members of the second unit through the fabric and into engagement with the pulling means, for withdrawal through the fabric by the latter. A head 1 is rigid with an apertured blade 3 and with a rod 2 passing through a sleeve 17 rigid with a finger 19 slidable in head 1. Resilient wire latch members 15 comprises straight portions 15a disposed in opposed grooves 16 formed in rod 2, inturned lower ends 15b disposed in a diametrical bore formed in rod 2, outwardly-inclined portions 15c passing through opposed slots 18 formed in sleeve 17, and inturned upper ends 15d disposed in a diametrical bore formed in rod 2. A head 4, rigid with a hollow handle 5 slidable on sleeve 17, is normally biased against ends 15d by a spring 20 contained in handle 20 to prevent sliding movement of the latter. Arms 6, 6a are pivoted at their upper ends to head 4, and have hooked lower ends limited in outward movement by pins 8 on head 1 and adapted to cooperate with cam surfaces 7 on head 1 during sliding movement of handle 5. In operation, a length of tuft yam 14 is inserted in a recess 13 in head 1, blade 3 is inserted between adjacent strands 9, 10 of a base fabric, and downward pressure is applied to handle 5, When finger 9 engages the fabric, sleeve 17 slides upwardly to co-operate with the portions 15c for moving the ends 15d inwardly to disengage from head 4. Further pressure on handle 5 thereby causes the latter to slide on sleeve 17, when the hooked ends of arms 6, 6a push the ends of yarn 14 in opposite directions through the aperture in blade 3. On release of pressure on handle 5, the latter is moved upwardly by spring 20 into latched position, and withdrawal of blade 3 from the fabric draws the yarn ends through the yam loop laid over the strands 9, 10.
