Description
E. BACKES ATTACHMENT TO FOLDING COMES, BRUSHES, AND THE LIKE Filed July so. 1926 Patented Dec. :6, 1927.
ERNST IBAOKES, OF ST. GALL, SWITZERLAND.
ATTACHMENT TO FOLDING COMES, BRUSHES, AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 30, 1926, Serial No. 126,030, and in Germany November 11, 1925.
This invention relates to improvements in folding combs, brushes and similar articles provided with folding sheaths engaging the back of such articles.
According to the present invention the sheath is provided with a hinge joint and means are provided to secure the sheath and thereby the implement in its unfolded position. These means may comprise a locking device having a spring locking pawl arranged on one of the folding parts of the sheath, the locking pawl being situated on the opposite side to that on which the hinge is arranged. When the sheath is unfolded it is automatically locked in this unfolded. position whereby the handling of the imple ment is essentially facilitated.
Further one part. of the comb or brush may displaceably be arranged in one part of the sheath and it may be slid partly into the other sheath for locking the parts of the sheath in their unfolded condition.
Two constructional examples of the subject matter of the present invention areillustrated on the accompanying drawing, in
which:
Fig. 1 isa side view of the bipartite sheath,
in its unfolded position,
Fig. 2 is a section along line II-II in Fig. 1.
Figs. 3 and 4 show a second constructional example of a bipartite folding comb of Which Fig. 3 shows the comb in its unfolded position and Fig. 4 shows the comb on being folded. Fig. 5 is a detail modification. The folding sheath for the back of for instance a comb consists of the hollow parts 1 and 2 of U-shaped cross-section which are 40 provided with fiat end faces 7 and which are connected by a hinge joint 3. Folding combs, brushes and the like are inserted with their back in the parts 1 and 2 of the sheath.
A spring actuated locking device is arranged on the side remote of the hinge 3 and consists of a spring pawl 4 fixed in the part 2, the hooked end of which pawl cooperates with a projection 5 provided in the part 3.
By pressing the button 6 the locking device is rendered inoperative and the sheath together with the combmay be folded.
Obviously more than two; parts may be hinged together and provided with looking. devices. I
With the constructional example illustrated in Figs. 3' and 4 the comb part1 is rigidly fixed in the sheath 1 and the comb part 1, is shorter than the sheath .so that the empty portion 89 the comb part 2', which is slidable in its sheath 2, can be inserted when the sheaths 1 and 2 are in their unfolded position. The comb part 2 is secured in its sheath parts by means of pins 10 passing through slots 11 provided in the comb part 2. Fig. 3 shows the folding comb in its unfolded position in which the part 2 is pushed into the sheath 1 whereby the folding comb is locked. The locking and unlocking of the folding comb is thus very conven- I iently performed.
As is shown in Fig. 5 one part of the comb has a cross-section which is bulged out at 12 and the other bulged in at 13 to permit the sheath parts to bear on each other when the comb is folded.
I claim:
1. A folding comb, comprising sheath parts connected together by hinges and adapted to be folded, a part of the comb rigidly fixed to one of the sheath parts and being of a shorter length than the sheath part, other parts of the comb slidably arranged in their sheath parts and adapted to be pushed into the adjacent sheath parts for locking the latter in their unfolded position.
2. A folding comb, comprising sheath parts connected together by hinges and adapted to be folded, a part of the comb rigidly fixed to one of the sheath parts-and be- Y ing of a shorterlength than the sheath part, other parts of the comb slidably arranged in their sheath parts and adapted to be pushed into the adjacent sheath parts for locking the latter in their unfolded, position, and pins fixed in the sheath parts forthe slidable comb parts and cooperating with slots in said comb parts for limiting the sliding movement. a
In testimony whereof I name to this specification.
