INVEN'IDRy D. FELIX. SHAVING BRUSH.
APPLICATION HLnnsBPT-1'r. 1907.
DAVID FELIX, OF GLASGOW, SCOTLAND.
SHAVING-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 9, 1908.
To all 'whom it may Gomera:
Be it known that I, DAVID FELIX, hairdresser, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Shaving and other Purposes, of which the following is a specification.
lhe public visiting shaving saloons have, as is well known, a well founded objection to the use of a brush which has already been in use for a considerable period for the purpose of lathering numerous persons, and it colisequently appears desirable that, in a well-conducted shaving saloon, a fresh brush should be used for each customer, the cleansing and drying of shaving brushes, and the use of the same brush by several persons being thus abolished. Such a shaving brush being antiseptic, would doubtless be welcomed by the public at large, and this invention relates to that type of shaving and like brushes in which the brush part is adapted to be used once only and then discarded.
In order that my said invention may be properly understood I have hereunto appended one sheet of explanatory drawings in which Figures l and 2 are, respectively, an elevation and a vertical section of one construction of brush, while Figs. 3 and 4 are, respectively, a vertical section illustrating a modified construction of brush, and an elevation of same with the tuft of bristles removed.
Referring to these drawings According to one arrangement in accordance with this invention, and as illustrated by Figs. l. and 2, the tuft 2 of hair or the like is bound in the manner heretofore usual in the case of brushes intended to be inserted into quills or other tubular handles while the handle l comprises a base fl formed with or secured to a shell or tubular part 5, an inner tubular sheath 6, a pair or set of clamps 3, consisting of spring jaws inserted within the said sheath 6 and carried on the stem 7 which in turn is borne by the tube 5. These jaws 3 are adapted, when made to protrude beyond the outer end of the sheath 6 by pushing same down against the action of the spring 8, to spring apart to receive the bound end of the tuil't 2, and when the pressure is released to be withdrawn into the sheath 6 by the rising of the same under the action of the spring 8, with the result that the jaws 3 are forced together to gri the tuft 2 by the inward pressure appliec to the jaws by the sheath.
The sheath 6 is formed with small stops 9 to rest against the spring 8 and is maintained in place by the stop pin l0 in the slot Il which it enters by the double bayonet joint notch l2 shown in dotted lines in Fig. l. When the sheath 6 is in its extruded position and is turned so that the stop pin 10 enters the notch 13, Fig. l, the sheath 6 and tube 5 are locked together. By a slightly dierent arrangement as illustrated by Figs. 3 and 4 the spring 8 may be dispensed with and the outer sheath be actuated by the fingers and locked in position as described.
A brush constructed inv accordance with this invention, while fully meeting a want long felt in toilet saloons, may be found serviceable for other than shaving purposes; such for example, as in the application of medicaments, toilet preparations and the like or for other purposes for which the improvements are applicable. It is moreover, especially suitable for the use of travelers, as it obviates the risk of injury to a dressing` case by the insertion of a wet brush therein.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In brushes for shaving or other purposes, the combination comprising a shell containing a spring, a clamping device adapted to grip a prepared tuft of bristles and carried by said shell, a compressing sheath slidably secured to said shell and acted on by the said spring, and a bayonet joint connection between said shell and compressing sheath, substantially as described.
2. In brushes for shaving or other purposes, the combination comprising a shell, a stem secured therein carrying a clamping device adapted to grip a prepared tuft of bristles, a compressing sheath sliding upon said shell, and a bayonet joint connection between said shell and sheath, substantially as described.
3. In brushes for shaving or other purposes a shell, a clamping device carried thereby, a sheath longitudinally movable on said shell to actuate said clamping device and means for locking said sheath and shell when the clamping device is closed, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID FELIX.
