GEORGE O. HENNING, OF
FFIGE.
WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHIRT FRONTS OR DICKEYS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 215,743, dated May 27, 1879 application filed March 14, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE 0. HENNING, of Washington, in the county of WVashington and District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirt- Dickeys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My improvement in shirt fronts or dickeys consists in combining with the bosom and neck band a yoke and a pair of sleeves and back and front gussets, so shaped and attached as to keep the garments in proper position on the shoulders of the wearer, and to hold the bosom down smooth upon the person of the wearer, counteracting any tendency of the bosom to rise or get out of place. I can thus produce a shirt front or dickey which fits the person well and maintains itself in position, while at the same time it is not held upon the wearer by waistband or any other device extending around the waist, or in any way binding the body.
The nature of my improvements will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front view of thedickey. Fig. 2 is a rear .view of the same. Fig. 3 represents the front gusset, and Fig. 4 the back gusset, detached.
The shirt-front A, which is of any ordinary or suitable pattern or make, is provided with the neck band, a. It can also, if desired, be provided with the bottom loop or fastening, a, although this is not essential, the garment being of such construction that the bosom will maintain its place without the aid of loop or other bottom fastening. B is the yoke, to which the sleeves O are attached at top, as in a full shirt.
On each side of the bosom is inserted a front gusset, D, shaped as indicated in Fig. 3, ex-
tending from the yoke down to the bottom of the bosom. The front parts of the sleeves are attached to these gussets D. On the back there is also on each side a. gusset, E, (whose configuration is shown in Fig. 4,) attached to the yoke and to the back part of the sleeve, and meeting and attached to the narrow lateral extension of the front gusset, D, under the sleeve at (1. These front and rear gussets, attached to the yoke and sleeves, and fitting in the space between the sleeves and the bosom in front and the yoke and the extremes of the divided collar-band behind, and proportioned and connected to one another and to the shirtbosom, as shown, serve to keep the garment securely in position on the shoulders without cramping or interfering with the free movement of the arms.
The constructionis such, also, that the bosom is held flat and smooth, its tendency to rise or get out of place being counteracted by the arrangement of the parts which I have termed gussets. All this is accomplished Without a waistband or other device to confine the lower end of the dickey, and without providingthe garment with a back. The sole fastening that is used is the button by which the two ends of the neck band are connected together after the garment is put on.
I do not claim, broadly, ashirt-front provided with sleeves and side flaps or pieces extendin g under the arms; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the here ill-described shirt front or dickey, consisting of a shirt-bosom and neck-band, yoke, and sleeves, combined with the front and rear gussets, D E, formed and arranged and attached to said parts as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE O. HENNING. Witnesses:
E. N. WATERS,
FRED. W. PRATT.
