Collar.
No. 205,528. Patented July 2, 18781.
WITNESSES l al INVENT'o @jf-M muy @JL @f/41% ATT NEvs UNrrnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY O. CONAVAY, OF DEEP RIVER, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,528, dated July 2, 1878; application filed January 31, 187B.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. CoNAwnv, of Deep River, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Collars; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specilication.
This invention has for its object to furnish a collar that will be adjustable to the neck in such manner as to prevent the annoyance of bitching up, so frequent in collars of ordinary construction.
a is the collar, divided in the back into the two equal parts al a2, which are hinged vvtogether by a fixed pivot, or on the back collar-button, so that when applied around the neck they will have a hinged or swinging vertical movement independent of each other, for the purposes hereinafter explained.'
In Figures l and 4 the halves are secured together by a single pivot, a3; in Figs. 2 and 3 they are each secured by a separate pivot to an intermediate piece, a" and in Fig. 5 they are disconnected, and provided with buttonholes for looping` on the rea-r collar-button of the shirt.
b is a lng, to which the parts or halves al a2 may be pivoted. It extends down the back of the shirt, may be of any desired or ornamental shape, and has one or more button-holes, which are placed over buttons on the back ot' the shirt, below the collar-band.
In a collar divided in the back, as described, so that each half will have a swinging movement on the front button and the pivotal point behind, there will not be that hitching up so frequent and annoying in collars of ordinary construction. The collar will hold steadily in its position at all times.
The lng b is adapted to raise or lower the rear part of the collar, to make the latter fit the neck more perfectly.
It will be seen that this collar is adjustable, so that collars one or two sizes larger than the neck may be worn and made to tit comparatively easy.
In a collar constructed as hereinbefore described, the free vertical movement of the sides thereof is not limited by either the front or the rear collar-button, thereby permitting a greater degree of adjustment and adapta-- bility to the neck. There are no button-holes in the collar behind. The button-holes are in the lug b, which attaches to buttons secured to the garment below the collar-band. By means of the button-hole lug b, the rear side ofthe collar may be drawn down to any desired extent necessary to bring the front and sides to t the neck.
I am aware that metallic collars have been made in two pieces, pivoted together at the back. and provided with button-holes, by which they are to be attached to the same button.
I am also aware that collar button-hole lugs have been manufactured, and I do notclaim, broadly, such devices; but,
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The combination of .the button-hole lug b, having the bearing or bearings a3, and the collar a, composed of the parts al a2, having their rear ends pivoted together and to the lug b by the bearing or bearings a3, on which they turn freely, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
y HENRY O. CONAWAY.
