UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE- DANIEL GUN DELFIN GER, J 1%., AND ANDREW GUN DELFIN GER, OF JEFFERSON CITY, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEMENT IN KNlFE-SHARPENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 205,077, dated June 18, 1878; application filed April 27, 1878.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DANIEL GUNDELFIN- GER, J r., and ANDREW GUNDELFINGER, of Jefferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Knife- Sharpeners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of longitudinal vertical sectional View of a stove-top, showing our method of attaching a knife-sh arpener. Fig.2 ais plan view of a stovetop, showing the same. Fig. 3 is a modification of the same, showing the application to old Stoves. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken through the line at a: of Fig. 3.
The nature of our invention relates to devices for sharpening knives; and it consists in novel means for attaching the same to top plates of cooking-stoves, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The annexed drawing, to which reference is made, fully illustrates our invention.
A represents the top plate of an ordinary cooking-stove, in one edge of which is formed an opening, with a box or holder, B, projecting downward below the stove-plate. Across the bottom of the box B are two plates or crossbars, 0 O. This box with cross-bars can all be cast with the stove-plate.
In the box B is inserted a bar, D, of emery,
steel, or other suitable sharpening material,
which is adjusted upward, as may be required, by means of screws a a passed through tapped holes in the cross-bars 0. By this means a knife-sharpener is obtained which is always handy and ready for use without any trouble of fastening in place and removing again.
This form of our invention is specially intended to be applied in the manufacture of new stoves.
For old stoves we provide a holder, F, in which the sharpening-bar D is held, and said holder fastened by screws 12 b to the edge of the top plate A of the stove.
The advantages of our invention are numerous and too obvious to need to be enumerated.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure v.by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of a top plate of a stove with holder for supporting a knife-sharpener and mechanical means for securing the same.
2. A top plate of a stove provided with a cavity or holder for supporting a knife-sharpener, and an adjusting device, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the above we have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL GUNDELFINGEB, J R. ANDREW GUNDELFINGER. Witnesses:
H. HERMANN NEEF, CHRISTOPHER REXROTH.
