Description

J. F. HADDAN.
cnuau. APPLICATION HLED APR.1| I916.
Patented Jan. 23, 1917.
J-F- HHDDHN JAMES F. I-IADDAN, OF DOERUN, GEORGIA.
CHURN.
Application filed April 1, 1916.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ill-urns F. HADDAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doerun, in the county of Colquitt and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in churns and it is an object of the invention to pro ide. novel and improved means whereby a cover may be effectively maintained in applied position upon the body and especially during the churning operation.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved churn whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure l is a side elevational view illustrating a cover retaining means constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my in vention; Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the device as disclosed in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in top plan of the invention as herein embodied; and Fig. t is an enlarged view partly in elevation and pa 'tly in section illustrating the means for adjusting the spring actuated means herein disclosed relative to the body.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 5 denotes a churn body with which 00- acts the removable cover 6. Operating in the churn body is a conventional dasher connected to the rod 9 which passes in a conventional manner through the cover 6.
A denotes a vertically disposed support positioned in close proximity to the body 5 and which is provided with the vertically directed elongated slot 26 through which the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 23, 1917. Serial No. 88,383.
bolt 27 is disposed. The bolt 27 is carried by the plate 7 included in the spring actuated means, indicated in its entirety as 7, to provide means whereby the tension of the spring 30 exerted upon the cover may be varied as well as adapting the means 7 to be adjusted in accordance with the various heights at which the cover 6 may be disposed. A nut 27 may be used on the bolt 27 for its customary pi. pose. The spring 30 has a loop portion 39 provided with the spaced extensions 40 adapted to contact with the cover 6 while the portion of the loop 39 intermediate the extensions 40 is extended inwardly, as at 41, and with which the hook 28 is adapted to be engaged when it is desired to hold the spring actuating means 7 in an inoperative position. As herein disclosed, the hook 28 is secured to the plate 7 through the medium of the staple 29. although this forms no particular part of my present invention. It is also to be stated that the spring 30 is of a coil type but any other form of construction may be employed which will operate with facility.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a churn constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim A device of the character described comprising a body, a support positioned adjacent the body, a cover for the body, a plate engaged with the support and capable of vertical adjustment in a direction toward or from the body, a spring carried by the plate and including a loop portion provided with extensions adapted to engage with the cover to hold the cover in engagement with the .5 extended portion of the loop for holding the spring in an inoperative position relative to the cover.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES F. HADDAN.
