Be it known that I, AARON BOLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Barberton, in the county of Summit, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful \Vagon-Stake, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in wagon stakes in which the wagon stake may be easily and readily attached to or detached from the bolster, and in which said stake is securely and firmly held upon said bolster when connected thereto.

The object of my invention is to provide a wagon stake which may be readily attached to or detached from the bolster of a wagon.

Another object of my invent-ion is to provide such a wagon stake in which the stake will be held securely against reciprocatory motion.

These objects together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art, I attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although my invention is capable of embodiment in other forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.

In the drawingsFigure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wagon stake, showing the same in position upon a bolster. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same upon an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower portion of the wagon stake showing the same in position within the bolster plate.

Similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.

The numeral 1 indicates a wagon stake provided at its lower extremity with the ears 2. The said wagon stake is preferably made of metal and is provided on its outer face near its lower extremity with the horizontally disposed lug 3. To the end of the bolster 4 is secured the bolster plate 5, which is preferably rounded at the end 6 so as to conform to the shaft of the bolster. The downwardly extended flange 7 is provided around the sides and outer end of the bolster plate, the downwardly depending porton 8 being provided at the outer end of said flange. At ,the inner extremity of each flange a small lug 9 is provided, and intermediate said lugs 9 and the depending portion 8 upon each side of said bolster plate is located a downwardly extended ear 10 preferably of the same general outline as the ears 2 upon the wagon stake. Said ears are not in alinement with the flanges 7 but are preferably located in a plane beyond said flange, the inner face of each ear forming one side of the slot 11, through which the ears 2 upon the wagon stake, are passed. A circular aperture 12 in each of the ears 1O registers wit-h a similar aperture in each of the ears 2. An inwardly extending vertically disposed flange 14 is located upon the inner end of each ear 10. I

When it is desired to attach the wagon stake to the bolster of a wagon, the bolster plate 5 is placed .upon the end of the bolster in the position shown in Fig. 1, the flange 7 fitting snugly around the upper edge of the bolster. A bolt 15 is then passed through the aperture 16 in the bolster plate and downwardly through the bolster and a nut 16 screwed upon the end of said bolt, drawing the bolster plate firmly down upon the bolster. The wagon stake 1 is then placed in the position shown in Fig. 1, the ears 2 thereon extending through the slots 11 in the upper face of the bolster plate 5. The bolt 17 is passed through the apertures 12 and 13 upon one side, through the bolster, and through the apertures 13 and 12 upon the other side and is securely fastened by a nut. The bolt 18 is passed upwardly through the bolster, through the aperture 19 in the.

bolster plate and through the lug 3 and a nut 20 screwed thereon. The wagon stake is now firmly held in proper position for use. When it is desired to remove said wagon stake it is only necessary to remove the nut 20 and the bolt 17 when the wagon stake may be lifted off of the bolster leaving the bolster plate 5 screwed upon the bolster.

In wagon stakes of the usual construction flanges such as 1 1 are not provided upon the bolster plate. By this construction the whole strain upon the wagon stake has to be carried by the bolt 17 and as there is necessarily a slight reciprocatory motion of the wagon stake as the strain upon said wagon stake is increased or reduced the ears 2 will in time shear off the head of the bolt 17 or otherwise cut the bolt so as to make it necessary to replace said bolt. By my improved construction the ears 2 lie against the flanges 14 and any increased pressure upon the wagon stake inerely tends to hold said ears more firmly against said flanges 14:, thereby, taking practically all of the strain off of the bolt 17. The lug 3 bearing upon the upper face of the bolster plate 5 also tends to lessen the strain upon the bolt 17. The strengthening rib 21 is provided upon the outer face of the wagon stake.

I claim-- In a device of the character described, a'

bolster, a bolster plate adapted to fit upon the upper face of the bolster and near the end thereof, a downwardly extended flange formed upon the bolster plate adapted for contact with the sides and end of said bolster, said flange provided with a depending portion on its outer end, downwardly ex- AARON BOLANDER.
