Description

HAWSON & SWEENEY.
Water-Bowls.
No. 126,457. Patented May 7,1872.
57' p fv We JW AM- P110717 UTHOGNIFHIL 00 NY Y IGSEOHNES PROCESS I UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL HAWSON, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW' JERSEY, AND THOMAS SWEENEY, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-BOWLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 126,457, dated May 7, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL HAWSON, of Jersey City, in the State of New Jersey, and THOMAS SWEENEY, of Brooklyn, in the State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Bowls, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of our invention consists in the arrangement of a fixed and a movable plate on the cover in the inside of a water-bowl, between Which the brush, after being saturated with water, is drawn out to strain off any surplus of water contained in the brush.
Figure I represents a section of a waterbowl embodying our invention, and Fig. II is a top view of the same.
A represents a water-bowl, and B the cover, having a large opening, D, to fill the bowl and to allow the free passage of the brush. To the under side of the cover B, on one side of the opening D, a plate, 0, slanting toward the center of the opening, and extending about the whole length of said opening, is firmly attached. On the opposite side of this plate 0 a similar plate, E, is hinged at a to the under side of said cover B, to which a suitable rod, F, is attached, passing through the cover B, and provided with a head or knob, G, on its end. Between the knob G and the cover B a spring, J, is arranged, in such a manner as to pull the plate E away from the fixed plate 0 to allow free passage for the brush into the water-bowl.
When the brush has been saturated with Water, and is withdrawn from the bowl, a pressure on the knob Gr forces the hinged plate E against the fixed plate G, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. I, and while the saturated brush is drawn out of the water-bowl, the same must pass between the edges of the two plates 0 and E, when the surplus water will be strained off from the end of the brush.
The spring J may, if desired, be placed in the inside under the cover B, and connected to the rod F, so as to keep the movable plate E away from the fixed plate 0 whenever no pressure is applied to the rod F or knob Gr.
Instead of fastening the plate 0 to the under side of the cover B, part of said cover may, on one side of its opening D, be bent downward; and, instead of the hinged plate E, a sliding plate may be arranged, moving toward the edge of the fixed plate, and drawn away from the same by the action of a suitable spring.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of a fixed plate, 0, in combination with a hinged or movable plate, E, on the cover of a water-bowl, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
