IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-WICKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,096, dated February 5, 1878;

application filed December 18, 1877.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WALTON DUANE SMITH, of Prophetstown, in the county of Whitesides and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Wioks; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

My invention relates to lamp-wicks; and it consists in combining, with an ordinary lampwick, an asbestus tip and a struck-up sheetmetal cap for holding the same to the end of the wick, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, and Fig. 2 a longitudinal section.

A represents an ordinary lamp-wick, on the end of which is a tip, B, of asbestus. The asbestus tip B is held to the wick by means of a perforated sheet-metal cap, 0, which is struck up froma single piece of metal in the following manner: The body of the piece of sheet metal is made of the same width as the lampwick, and the center portion 0 thereof is provided with numerous perforations, leaving an imperforated portion, 0 at each end thereof. From the center of each part extends a strap,

.0 as shown. From each strap 0 are cut triangular or V-shaped tongues a. a.

The entire plate may be cut at one time by suitable dies, and is then bent in the center,

the perforated portion or cap 0 surrounding the asbestus tip B, the imperforated portions 0 and straps 0 extending down the sides of the wick. The tongues a on one of the straps O are cut or broken off, and those on the other strap are passed through the wick, through the hole in the strap on the opposite side, and then clinched.

Near the end of the part 0 on one side, between it and the wick, are placed two narrow metal strips, 1) b, which extend across and beyond the edges of the wick, and their ends then bent in opposite directions to hold the wick and the metal cap closely together. The ends of the metal cap, with the wick between them, may be fastened together by eyelets, or in any other suitable manner; or, in place of making the cap of sheet metal, it may be made of wire-gauze, if so desired.

'Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isg 1. The sheet-metal cap constructed, as described, of the perforated part 0, imperforated parts 0 O, and straps G 0 with tongues a 'a, in combination with the wick A and asbestus tip B, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.

2. The strips 1) b, in combination with the cap, tip, and wick, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
