WILLIAM L. MERRIN, OF FREDERIOKTOVVN, OHIO, ASSIGNOB OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO WILLIAM STURGEON.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORGAN-REEDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,267, dated March 12, 1878 application filed August 27, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. MERRIN, of Fredericktown, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Organ-Reeds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is arepresentation of a perspective view of my organ-reed; and Figs. 2, 3, and 4 are detail views thereof.
The nature of my invention consists in a compound reed, composed of two or more tongues, thus producing from one and the same reed two or more tones of great volume and purity, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. 7
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention.
A represents the body or block, out with a longitudinal slot, in which the reed is to vibrate. The reed is composed of two or more tongues, B O, of different sizes, the smaller tongue vibrating in the next, larger one, and so on, and all vibrating within or on the block A.
The first or largest tongue B is made of metal or other vibrating substance, in form similar to the slot a in the block A, in which it is designed to vibrate. In this tongue B is a slot or elongated hole, b, to receive the second tongue or reed O.
The tongue 0 may be fastened by rivets, solder, or otherwise at either end of the tongue B. A slot may be cut in this second tongue 0,
and a third tongue fastened thereto, and so on with as many tongues as may be desired, thus making the reed consist of two or more tongues, as may be desired. The whole reed is then fastened on the block A, either by pins, solder in a groove in the block, or in any other suitable or convenient manner.
Instead of cutting slots in the reeds or tongues and fastening them, as above described, they may be cut or made of a single piece of metal or other suitable material, and the reeds may be tuned in unison, octaves, fifths, or in any desired manner, with each other. I intend, also, to attach to the ends of the tongue or tongues a small piece of metal or other substance, by wire or otherwise, which nearly fits a hole of corresponding size and shape in the reed-block below, but enough smaller to just pass through.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An organ-reed composed of two or more tongues of difi'ering sizes, the smaller tongue vibrating in the larger, and the whole vibrating in the reed-block, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination of the slotted reed-block A, the slotted tongue 13, and the tongue 0, substantially as and for the PLIlPOSGS herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereimto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM L. MERRIN.
Witnesses:
