UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM S. MARSH, OF NEW GLOUCESTER, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,941, dated December 11, 1877 application filed Angust 10, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM S. MARSH, of New Gloucester, in the county of Cumberland and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein- Holders; and I do hereby declare that the ibllowing is afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 shows a side elevation of one side of my rein-holder; Fig. 2, the same of the opposite side. Fig. 3' is an edge view, showing the way of applying it to a dasher and Fig. 4 is a detail view.
Same letters of reference relate to same parts.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of rein-holders, and aims to furnish a device easy to construct and simplein its operations; and it consists in the combination and novel arrangement of the hinged bar, spring, and clamps, or device for attaching it to the dasher or dasher-rails of carriages.
a a are bars, hinged at b. 0 shows one part of the clamp, which passes down the side of the dasher, and acts as a brace to hold the device in place. 0 shows the other part of the clamp, which also passes down the side of the dasher. f f are plates, extending from 0 on either side, having their ends turned down and provided with grooves to fit the dasherrail or top of the dasher. The part c is also, on the inside, provided, for the same purpose, with a grooved shoulder. h is the point at which the two parts of the clamp are hinged together. i is a thumb-screw, which, operating through c, presses against 6, above h, and
causes the lower part of e to draw toward 0, and hold the device rigidly and firmly to the dasher. d is a curved spring-plate, set on the upper part of 0, with its ends pressing the bars a toward and against the plates f, in such a manner that anything placed between them will be firmly held in place.
When the invention is used it is placed upon the dasher, as indicated in Fig. 3. Then all that is necessary, when the driver wishes to leave the carriage, is to place the reins between the bars a and plates f, and they, will be securely held, and can be removed with case from between the same when it is desirable.
It will be readily seen that in my invention I provide, by a simple device, a sure and efficient way of preventing reins from falling under the feet of horses, as is very often the case when dropped carelessly upon the dasher.
The principal advantage in my invention is the ease with which it can be adjusted to dashers of different thicknesses.
I hereby disclaim a rein-holder having plates, ears, set screws, support, and spring, as claimed in Patent No. 189,213, dated April 3 1877. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A combination of the hinged bar a, spring d, plates f, thumb-screw i, and clamp, composed of the parts a and e, arranged to form a rein-holder, and operating substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own. I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
W. S. MARSH.
