IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING LABELS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 90,446, dated May 8, 1877; application filed March 19, 1877.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. Form, of the city of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp-Affixers, which improvements are fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a cross-section through the center of the device, showing the cover and handle partly opened. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation; Fig. 3, a vertical cross-section through line X X, Fig. 9. Fig. 4 is a side elevation, showing the cover of the device in the position for forming a handle. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal section through line Y Y, Fig. 9. Fig. 6 represents that portion of the cover forming the back or top of the de vice, and a spring for operating the lower cover. Fig. 7 is a top view; Fig. 8, a side elevation, showing how a larger handle may be applied thereto when required; and Fig. 9 is a bottom view, showing the same view of a postage-stamp in position for being attached to a letter, or its equivalent.

The object of my invention is to produce a portable stamp-affixer, adapted to be conveniently closed up and carried in the pocket; and it consists, first, in the combination of a box or frame to hold the stamp with a cover for the top and bottom, capable of being easily removed when in the position shown in Fig. 1, and of forming a handle when in the position shown in Fig. 4..

The second partot' my invention consists in the combination of the top and bottom covers, the two being hinged together, a portion of the upper one forming a spring, which acts on the hinged part of the lower one, so as to hold it when in the position shown in Fig. l, and also to hold it or cause it to spring shut.

My invention further consists in combining, with the inside spring-plate and bottom cover, a plate of soft rubber for the double purpose of providing a soft padding and a tight water-proof joint for protecting the stamps, as will more clearly hereinafter appear.

In said drawings, A represents the box or frame; B O, the top and bottom covers, hinged together at D, B representing the top part,

and) the lower part. E is a plate of soft rubber, cemented to O, as shown, for the purpose of keeping the stamps dry, and otherwise protecting them. The inside plate F is also provided with a soft-rubber plate, G. It is pressed down on the stamps G by means of the springs H, which are firmly fastened to the plate F. (Shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5.) I represents a slot in the frame, one on each side, which lets the handle 0 pass down when necessary; J J represent small pieces projecting inward on each side, for holding B when in place.

When it is necessary to fill the box with stamps, the cover 0 is opened in the position shown in Fig. 1; then B is easily drawn out and the stamps put in, the narrow flange A preventing them from passing through unless drawn out, one at a time, by the adhesiveness of the mucilage or gum, when attaching them to a letter or paper, as hereinbefore mentioned. The parts are then put together and closed up ready for use.

It will be noticed that the tongue B on B acts'as a spring, and presses against the fiattened sides of the joint D, holding it as shown in Fig. 1 by pressing on the :part D and shut by pressing on the flat part D as shown in Fig. 3.

I claim as my invention 1. The angular-shaped plate (3, hinged at D,

as described, in combination with the box A, adapted to form either a cover or handle, as specified.

2. The cover B, provided with a spring, B, in combination with the cover 0, hinged joint D, formed as shown at D D for the purpose of holding the cover in the position shown in Fig. 1, so that it can be withdrawn or held shut, as in Fig. 3.

3. The box A, to receive and hold the stamps, having a narrow flange, A, surrounding the bottom, a removable plate, F, provided with springs H, and rubber pad or plate G, in combination with a removable cover arranged above said spring-plate F, for the purposes specified.
