SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 538,837, dated May 7, 1895.

To all whom, t may concern:

vBe it known that I, JOSEPH B. LMJGFHTON,4

consists of a combined roller and flat pad each adapted for its special uses,y and also adapted for utilizing the roller pad as an inking roller for distributing the ink on the fiat pad and on itself also, and'thus providing the flat pad withthe best of all known means of distributing the ink, for lack of which a brush or cloth is now used withvery inferior effect, all as hereinafter fully described reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a birds-eye view of my improved combined roller and flat pad in the 'normal conditions with the coverraised. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the roller-pad in the condition for use as an inking-roller for the dat pad and for distributing the ink on itself". Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the combined flat transverse section of the combined roller and dat pad on line y y, Fig.r2. Fig. 5 is an end View of the combined pad with part of a stamp, showing the manner of inking a flexible stamp or a stamp too long to be inked by one stroke on the fiat pad. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the roller-pad as it may be provided for use independentiy of the fiat pad for long stamps, and also for flexible stamps, and being about as useful for short stamps as a fiat pad. For inking long stamps as a, also flexible stamps that it is difficult to ink uniformlyon a flat pad as b, I provide a roller pad c, mounted on pivots d, so that the stamp can be rolled lengthwise on the roller as indicated in Fig. 5, and thus be inked uniformly from end to Fig. 4 is a.

end, and enabling a much smaller pad to serve for long stamps than will serve in flat shape except bystriking the stamp on it two or more times which is objectionable both on account of the extra labor, and the lack of uniformity in the application of the ink tothe stamp.

For greatest utility I combine a fiat pad b, and aeroller pad c in suitable relation in one article whereby with both pads of small size the kit is adapted for stamps of any length and also for rigid or fiexible stamps, and I mount the rollerrpad detachably from the bed piece e', of the pad holder and in a holder f, whereby it may be taken in the hand and be rolled along the surface of the flat pad as represented in Fig. 4, for distributing the ink on both pads, the ink being first applied to either one by a brush or swab, or by dripping on to it. The said holder consists in this case of a box open at the top and having the roller pivoted in its ends with a flange g, at each end. to rest on thesurface of the bed-piece e having a recess k at the side of the flat pad in which the said holder is placed for its connection in the combined yarticle and for use as a roller pad, butl the said holder may be constructed in 'any other approved way whereby it may occupy its place in the said combined article and whereby it may be conveniently taken up and rolled on the dat pad.

For use of the roller pad independently of the flat pad the box for holding it will preferably have a little broader base as f Figs. 6, 7 and S, and a semi-circular cover h will be provided and arranged to swing on the roller pivots d, for covering and uncovering the roller, with a hook and staple 1l, for fastening the cover when closed.

The bed frame e, for the combined pads is provided with the usual cover j, which is vhinged to the bed piece in the usual manner and so as to incase both pads when closed.

The bod-y ot the rollerpad is to be covered with any suitable material as feltor the like as iu flat pads for a container and distributer of the color, paste or ink.

I claiml. The combination in an inking pad of the fiat pad, the inclosing case therefor having the recess in the bed piece alongside of the flat pad, the ink roller, and the ink roller IOO having the recess for said roller and holder substantially as described.
