Stamps, of which the following is. a specification.
My invention is an improvement in the class. of stamps, similar to rubber stamps, and adapted to mark any suitable surface with an imprint by meansof raised letters extending beyond a supporting baseor surface.
The invention has in View to provide a stamp of this character, either for hand use or mechanical application by rolls, inconnection with a suitable inking pad or medium. A

The invention relates particularly to the flexibl'e removable printing element, adapted to be laid over the resilient cushion of the frame in the arc of a circle, and to be received. and held with sufii'cient tension to maintain it in position by the holding and tightening devices provided; in the manner more fully hereinafter described.
The invention forming the subject-matter of the presentapplication constitutes a divisional portion of the subject-matter of a prior application on the same invent-ion, filed Oct. 15, 1912, Serial No. 725838.

Referring to the general structure of: the machine illustrated in Figs. 1 and: 2- of the this. Kpplicmtion flied December -drawings, it comprises a light portable I frame oi the desired! size, preferably made of sheet metal having. end portions 2, 2-, connectedbya back 3 and a bottom portion- 4'. These parts are arranged, as illustrated,
for stiffness and convenience in'use, and are provided with gripping handles 5, 5, one at each end, carried by the outwardly projecting brackets 6, 6, respectively. The bottom 4 extends around underneathfrom one or flange 8, 8, which may be convenientlymade-byextend in'g-- the end 2 in the manner shown, and re-doubling it, as indicated at 9-, for insuringstrength and stiffness for the attaching and adjusting devices.
" The printing elementconsists 01? a strip 10 of webbing, canvas, or other suitable material with which is incorporated the rubber base 11 having the projecting intogral rubberstamping characters 12', formed by molding, as is wellunderstood. It will be understood, of course, that the terminal 13 may be otherwise secured or attached, if desired, as by riveting or sewing, for the same purpose. The terminal 13 is provided with a series of longitudinal slots 16 which extend outwardly for substantially the full width of the exposed portion of the terminal, and then at right angles to its main body portion centrally through a corresponding inwardly bent retaining flange 17, as indicated at 16.
Mounted transversely across the bottom 4 of the frame at one or both. ends is a tightening bar 18, and, I ordinarily utilize but one such tightening bar, due to the fact that the extent of curvature of the frame is not sufficient to prevent ample tightening from one end only. At the tightening end of the frame, in such case, I provide an adjusting screw 19, 19, one for each corner or side of the base, extending through and rotatable in suitable openings in the reinforced lip 9, each provided with a thumb terminal 20, 20. The bar 18 is correspondingly threaded, engaging the screws 19, and said screws at their other ends pass through up-turned lips or lugs 21, 21, formed of the sheet metal of the bottom 4, bypunching it upwardly therefrom, in the manner more clearly illustrated in my companion application referred to. The inner ends of screws 19 are provided with a terminal bearing nut or collar 22 with a tightening set nut, cotter pin, or other suitable device. The bar 18 is provided across its outer face with a plurality of pins 23' and along its outer edge with a correspond ing plurality of pins 24:. The purpose of pins 23 is to facilitate the alinement and adjustment of the terminal 13 in applying it to the bar by engaging slots 16, and of pins 24 to positively engage the slots 16, and to retain the terminal 13 in holding engagement with the bar 18, in addition to the engagement with the bar itself by the right angle lip or flange 17.
The terminal 13 at the other end of the stamping member is of the same construction and, in the hand machine, is ordinarily hooked over the reinforced lip 9, which is also provided with a series of pins 25, positively engaging the slots 16' and retaining that end of the stamping member.
The operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing dcscript-ion. When any particular stamping member is to be used, it is merely slipped over the lip 9 and into engagement with pins 25 at one end of the frame, laid across the cushion 7, the other terminal 13 brought down over the bar 18 with the slots registering with the pins 23 and 24:, and the bar 18' is then tightened by the screws until the printing element or strip is drawn taut across the cushion. The frame is then grasped by the handles 5, one in each hand, and the printing strip is inked by a partial rolling operation over a suitable inking pad,
when the impression is then made on the surface to be marked, in the same manner.
The curved surface of the device greatly facilitates the marking operation, enabling ample pressure to be exerted throughout the entire length of the stamp, insuring regularity of impression and great speed.
The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by all those familiar with this class of stamps. It facilitates the stamping operation; it obviates the necessity of keeping on hand alarge number of stamping bases, each having its particular stamp; it effects great economy in storage space of the several stamping elements; it is rapid and effective in facilitating changing the stamping strips; and, on account of the curved surface, it greatly simplifies the use of the device by the workman.
It will be understood that the invention may be greatly changed or varied in details of construction, design, proportion, etc. by the skilled mechanic, but that all such changes are to be considered as within the scope of the following claims.
What I claim is:
1. A stamping die consisting of a strip of rubber having on one side integral stamping portions projecting beyond the plane of the strip and on the other side a reinforcing back of textile material, and provided at each end with sheet metal attaching terminals embedded in the body portion of the rubber extending beyond the strip and having attaching and retaining portions, substantially as set forth. a
.2. A flexible stamping die consisting of a strip of webbing and rubber incorporated together the rubber having projecting stamping elements and provided at each end with sheet metal terminals having retaining flanges and having longitudinal slots, substantially as set forth.
3.
