Description

w. s. BING BRANDING APPARATUS Filed July 23, 1923 EMA/L24 I Patented Dec. '1 ti, i924.
UNITED STATES WILLZAEI S.
IBING, OE S AN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
BRANDING APPARATUS.
Application filed July 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VJILLIAM S. Brno, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a certain new and useful Branding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a branding apparatus, more particularly to such an apparatus for brandin or stamping cartons or cases of canned goods and the like, and the objects of my invention are First, to provide an apparatus of this class in which various lines of type are secured to different sup ports and which supports may be shifted relatively to each other or removed from the main support and replaced by others; secend, to provide an apparatus of this class which is particularly adapted for branding or stamping purposes for cartons or crates and in which the supports of the lines of type designating the different items to be branded or stamped upon the cartons or crates may be quickly and easily removed from the main support and substituted by lines of type appropriate for the particular carton or crate; third,'to provide an apparatus of this class in which the face of the type is arranged on a circular or curved plane, thereby facilitating the making of the impression of the type; fourth, to provide novel means in connection with an apparatus of this class for securing the type in position thereon and securing the different lines of type in certain spaced relation with each other; fifth, to provide as a whole a novelly constructed apparatus of this class, and sixth, to provide an apparatus of this class which is very simple and economical of construction, durable, efficient, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
\Vith these and other objects in view, as will appear hereinafter, my invention consists of certain novel features of construc tion, cinnbination and arrangement of parts and portions. as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims. reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon, which form a part of this application, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my branding apparatus showing the back side thereof; Fig. 2 is aside elevational view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom view of my 1923. Serial No. 653,164.
branding apparatus, showing the arrangement of the type.
Like characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings.
The supporting plate 1, handle members 2, rivets 3, handles l, bolts 5, type supporting members 6, positioning thumbscrews 7, wedge member 8, sponge rubber 9, rubber type supporting strips 10, and the type 11, constitute the principal parts and portions of my branding apparatus.
The supporting plate 1 is preferably made of sheet metal and curved, being cylindrical in shape, and provided on its back or concave side with upwardly and angularly extending handle members 2 secured at their lower ends to the supporting plate 1 by means of the rivets 3, a pair of said handle members being provided at each end of the supporting plate. A handle or grip member l is secured intermediate the extended ends of each pair of handle members 2 by means of the bolts 5 extending through said members. On the convex side of the supporting plate 1 are positioned and secured the type supporting members 6, which consist of flexible metallic strips provided with hook portions 6* on their one ends which are adapted to extend over the one edge of the supporting plate 1 and secure the one end of the type supporting members 6 in position. The opposite ends of the type supporting members 6 are provided with threaded portions 6 bent at right angles with the main port-ions of the members 6. On the inner sides of the portions 6 are provided additional members 6, preferably nuts, to reinforce said ends of the members 6, which. are provided with tapped holes through which extend the positioning thumhscrews 7, the inner ends of which are adapted to engage inclined portions on the back side of the supporting plate 1. The inclined portions on the back side of the plate 1 are preferably formed by means of a curved wedge member 8, secured to the one edge of the supporting plate 1 in any convenient manner. On the convex side of the type supporting members 6 is secured the type 11 in the form of letters and mu morals formed of rubber, secured together by means of rubber strips 10, preferably formed an integral part therewith. Said rubber strips 10 are supported on the sponge rubber foundation members 9, which are secured to the metallic type supporting members 6 in any convenient manner, preferably by being cemented thereto.
It is obvious: that when using my branding apparatus for branding cartons or crates of various descriptions or for various purposes, the type designating the various items on my branding apparatus may be readily changed to suit the various conditions and purposes. By referring to Figure 3 of the drawings it will be seen that the top line of type designating: 24, No. 2 tins, may be readily changed to read any other number of tins of different sizes, and that the items designating the brand of the goods or the name of the goods or products or the name of the packer and the like, may be readily changed or differently spaced as desired.
It is further obvious from the accompanying drawings and the foregoing specification that there is provided an apparatus as fully set forth in the objects of the invention, and though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not Wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my in vention, the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An apparatus of the class described, including a supporting member, readily removable type supporting members secured to the one side of said supporting member, yieldable foundation material secured on the outer surface of said type supporting members, and type members secured to the outer portion of said yieldable foundation material.
2. An apparatus of the class described, including a supporting member, readily removable type supporting members secured to the one side of said supporting member, said type supporting members consisting of book portions on one end adapted to extend over the one edge of said supporting member and provided with an adjustable retaining member at the opposite end adapted to engage the opposite edge of said supporting member, yieldable foundation material secured on the outer surface of said type supporting members, and type members secured to the outer portion of said yieldable foundation material.
3. An apparatus of the class described, including a cylindrically shaped supporting member, removable type supporting members secured to the convex side of said supporting member, said removable type supporting members being provided with hook portions on one end and adjustable securing members at the opposite end for engaging 'opposite edges of said cylindrically shaped supporting member, a yieldable foundation material secured on the convex side of said type supporting members, and type members secured to the outer surface of said yieldable foundation material.
4. An apparatus of the class described including a cylindrically shaped supporting member, removable type supporting members secured to the convex side of said supporting member, said removable type supporting members being provided with hook portions on one end and adjustable securing members at the opposite end for engaging opposite edges of said cylindrically shaped supporting member, a yieldable foundation material secured on the convex side of said type supporting members, and integrally molded rubber type and type supporting strips secured to the outer portion of said yieldable foundation material.
5. An apparatus of the class described, including a supporting member, removable type supporting members secured to the one side of said supporting member, said type supporting members consisting of a narrow strip provided with a hook portion on one end and a threaded portion at the opposite end, thumbscrews provided in the threaded ends of said type supporting members, a yieldable foundation material secured on the outer side of said type supporting members, and integrally molded type members and type supporting strips secured to the outer portion of said yieldable foundation material.
6. An apparatus of the class described, including a cylindrically shaped supporting member, removable, metallic, type supporting members secured to the convex side of said supporting member, said type supporting members consisting of narrow strips provided with hook portions on one end and threaded portions at the opposite end, thumbscrews provided in the threaded ends of said type supporting members, a yieldable foundation material secured on the convex side of said type supporting members, and type members secured. to the outer surface of said yieldable foundation material.
