CLOTHES HANGER SUPPORT Filed Soipt. 22, 192":

Patented Mar. 5, 1929.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. ENGELSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO BROOKLYN METAL STAMPING CORPORATION, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CLOTHES-HANGER SUPPORT.
Application filed September 22, 1927. Serial No. 221,278.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in supporting devices, and
more particularly to a supporting device for garment hangers. and the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple device of the character mentioned, constructed of two pieces of light metal which may be readily interlocked or severed when desired, whereby it may be set up for use on a structure or knocked down when desired.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a device composed of a base piece and an arm, the arm being capable of ready interlocking engagement with said base piece, and a still further object resides in providing means in connection with the base piece to rigidly support the arm in its con nection with the base piece, so as to prevent a twisting or torsional movement of the arm with respect to said base piece.
A still further object resides in providing an arm of a flat light piece of metal, tapering smaller toward one end thereof and having its one edge toothed, the spaces between said teeth providing means for supporting garment hangers and arranging same in spaced relation.
Still another object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
With these and numerous other objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a device constructed in accordance with my invention,
and set up for use;
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail section showing the connection between the arm and the base piece;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the device as set up for use; and
Figure 4 is a rear elevation of the removed.
In describing the invention, I shall efer to the drawing, in which similar reference base piece edges, respectively,
characters designate corresponding throughout the several views, and in which 1 designates a base plate or base piece, formed from a piece of light metal, the same being centrally and longitudinally offset, as shown at 2 to provide a channel portion thereon. This channel portion extends upwardly from the base plate proper so that the base piece has this central channel portion and substantially side wing portions thereon. The side wing portions are provided adjacent the corners thereof with orifices 3, through which may be extended the small screws 4 to secure the base piece to the wall or structure desig nated in the drawing by the numeral 5.
parts The top wall of the offset or channel portion 2 of the base piece 1 is provided with central spaced apart and longitudinally extending slots (3 and 7, and from opposite side edges of said slots 6 and 7 are, respectively, struck up flanges 8 and 9. As stated, these flanges 8 and 9 are struck up from opposite of the slots 6 and 7, as clearly shown in Figure 4 of the drawing and project inwardly into the channel portion of the base piece. The purpose of these flanges will be hereinafter and more particularly set forth.
The support proper comprises an arm 10 which is formed of a flat, light piece of metal, tapered smaller toward its one end and having its inclined edge toothed as shown at 11. This provides a serrated tapered edge whereby garment hangers may be supported in spaced relation. The wider end of the arm 10 has formed integral therewith, a pair of spaced bayonet prongs 12 which are adapted to be inserted through the slots 6 and 7, whereby a bayonet joint formed between the base piece 1 and the arm 10 will retain the latter to the former. Obviously, the flanges 8 and 9 on the side edges of the slots 6 and 7 contact with the bayonet prongs 12 projecting through slots 6 and 7, and when the arm 10 is properly adjusted in place, in a manner as shown in Figure 2 of the drawing, it will be seen that the flanges 8 and 9 w ll ct as side supports for the inner engaged end of the arm 10, thus preventing a wobbling or lateral movement of said arm with respect to the base piece. This feature is extremely essential, inasmuch as the device is formed of two separate and detachable pieces which are of thin light metal. The means for supporting the arm against lateral wobbling movement when engaged with the base piece is, obviously, important in a structure of this character.
It is apparent from this description of the construction of the device how the arm may be quickly and readily engaged with the base piece or removed when desired. In View of the detachability of the parts, the device may be packed in a small carton and shipped and sold at a very small cost.
From the foregoing, it Will be seen that'I have provided a simple, inexpensive and eflicient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor, details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A garment hanger comprising a plate having a raised intermediate portion forming a channel, said raised portion having aligned slots and provided at its inner side and at the edges of the slots with flanges located in said channel and an arm having prongs passing through the slots and engaging the end edges thereof..
2. A garment hanger comprising a plate having a raised intermediate portion forming a channel, said raised portion having aligned slots and provided at its inner side and at the edges of the slot with flanges located in said channel, one flange being located at one side edge of one of the slots and the other flange located at the opposite side edge of the other slot and an arm having prongs passing through the slots and engaging the end edges thereof.
In testimony whereof I aflix m signature.
DAVID H. EN ELSON.
