Be it known that I, W ILLiAM J. lxnninn, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing' at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamps, of which the following is a specifi-- ration.
My invention is an improvement in the class of stamps, similar to rubber stamps. and adapted to mark any suitable surfac with an imprint by' means of raised letters extending beyond a supporting base or surface.
The invention has in view to provide a stamp of this character, either`for hand use or mechanical application by rolls, in connection with a suitable inking pad or me dium.
One of the principal objects of the in vention is to provide a stamping element or die which may be attached to and used with a suitable supporting base, preferably resilient, whereby to avoid the necessity ot providing such hase for each particular stamp. Ordinarily, such stamps are made by molding the letters or characters in rubber on a printing portion which is permanently mounted and connected with the cushion, which in turn is affixed to the stamping handle or frame, the several parts forming inseparable portions of each stampingr unit. This practice, esi'iecially with stamps or rubber dies of large size, involves very .:onsiderable expense and storafgje room, which is avoided by my improvenient.

Referring to the hand operated machine, illustrated on sheet 1 of the drawings, it comprises a light portable frame of the desired size, preferably made of sheet metal having end portions 2, 2, connected by a berk 3 and a bottom portion 4. For the purpose of facilitating the loperation of the adjustinb toni 4 is preferably made straight for a short portion of its length, as indicated at ft (see Figs. 4tand 5), thus providing a flat surface over whieh the har t8 may move in paralleli-:ui with the adjusting serews 19.

The operation of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description. The curved surface of the deviee zgreatly facilitates the markingr operation, enabling ample pressure to be exerted throughout the entire length of the stamp, insiringregularity ot' impresion and great speed.

The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by all those familiar with this class of stamps. It facilitates the stamping operationg'it obviates the necessity of keeping on hand a large number of stamping bases, each having its particular stamp; it effects great economy in storage space of the several stamping elements; it is rapid and effective in changing the stamping strips; and, on account of the curved surface, it greatly simplifies and facilitates the use of tiie device by the workman.
It will beI understood that the invention may be greatly changed or varied in details of construction, design, proportion, etc. by the skilled mechanic, but that all such changes are to be considered as wit-hin the scope of the following claims.l
IVhat I claim is:
1. In a stamp of the class described, the combination of a rigid holding frame having an outcr'curved face, a fixedly attached vprojecting resilient cushion thereon having an outer conformably curved face, a flexible stamping die consisting of av strip of rubber having projecting integral stamping elements, sheet metal holding and clamping portions associate with the flexible stampand ext inding beyond each end there( f, and means on the holding frame for engaging the^terminal ends 'of said portions and tightening the die over the cushion, sb-

2. A stamp consisting of a rigid holding frame having an outer curved face, a fixedly attached projecting cushion thereon having an outer conformably curved face, a Hexible stamping die of reinforced rubber laid over said cushion and pr'ovided with metallic terminals, and means on the holding frame for engaging said terminals and-tightening the die over the cushion, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of a rigid holding frame having an outer curved face, 'gripping handles extending from each end portion of the frame. a curved projecting cushion thereon, holding devices embodying tightening mechanism projecting from the frame longitudinally beyond the cushion at cach end thereof, and a Hexible stamping die 4laid over `said cushion and engaging said holding devices by its ond portions, substantially as set forth. ,i

The combination with a holding frame having a curved bottom provided with terminal` securing Hanges, a supporting cushion, and a tightening bar, of a flexible stamping die laid over the cushion having terminal .clips engaging one of said flanges and said tightening bar respectively, and adjusting screws engaging the otherA of said /tianges and said tightening bar, substantially as set forth.
5. In a stamp of the class described, a holding frame of sheet metal having terminal handles, a curved bottoni, a. curved cushion projecting therefrom, terminal lips extending beyond the bottom at each end, one of said lips having pins and the other havgaging .said screws, and a flexible stamping die laid over said cushion having terminals adapted to engage one of said terminal lips and said bar respectively, substantially as set forth.
6. In a stamp of the class described, a holding frame of sheet metal having terminaDhandl'es, a curved bottom, a curved cushion projecting therefrom, terminal lips eX- tending beyond the bottom at each end, one of said lips having pins and the other having adjustingscrews, an adjusting bar engaging said screws and provided with pins, and a flexible stamping die laid over said' cushion having slotted l'rictallic terminals adapted to engage one of/said terminal lips and said bar and the pins thereon, substantially as set forth.
7. The combination of a supporting frame having a curved bottom, a tixedly attached projecting cushion thereon having an outer curved fac-e parallel with the face of `the bottom, projections extending outwardly beyond the bottom surface-beyond each terminal end of the `cushion, a flexible stamping die laid over the cushion, andl means for connecting the ends of the die with the pro`- jections and for tightening it over the'cush; ion, substantially as set forth.
8.
