ATTACHMENT FOR PRINTINGPB.ESS ES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 31 191 *7.
Application filed May 7, 1917. Serial No. 166,819.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, FRn nRIcK E. MEE- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an attachment for printing presses and particularly relates to a device for regulating the pressure of the ink-rolls upon the type or plates held in the chase.
When printing from type or plates having very fine rulings and shaded surfaces it is desirable to reduce the pressure of the ink-rolls upon the type and plates and thus reduce the amount of ink which will be placed upon them by the ink-rolls.
The object of my invention is to provide an attachment for printing presses which may readily be placed and secured upon the portion of the frame of the press which forms the tracks over which the ink-rollers travel, for the purpose of raising the inkrolls away from the type and reduce the pressure of the ink-rolls; a further object of my invention is to provide an attachment which will hold one or more filling strips between it and the frame so the various adjustments may be obtained; and a further object of my invention is to so construct the attachment that it will not become disengaged by the operation of the ink-rolls and which will not interfere with the operation of the ink-rolls.
Referring to the accompanying drawings; Figure 1, is a side elevation of a portion of the frame of a printing press and the inkrolls and showing my invention attached to the frame; Fig. 2, is a plan view of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, is a perspective view of my invention detached.
In the drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts, 1 and 2 represent the frame members of a printing press. The shaft 3 is carried by the frame members, and upon the shaft 3 are pivoted the arms 5 and 6 having sliding rods 7 carrying the saddles 9, in which are rotatably mounted the spindles 10, of the ink-rolls 12. Rollers 14, are loosely mounted upon the spindles 10. Said rollers 14 run upon the strips of metal, and provided with means 7 for securing them upon the tracksformed by the edges of theframemembers l and 2.
The plates 21 are provided with lips '23, which are bent at right angles to the plate 21, and are adapted to embrace the edges of the frame members 1 and 2, and hold the plates 21 from slipping sidewise. The upper end of each plate 21, is provided with an enlarged portion 24 having an opening 25, formed therein which is adapted to fit over the apex 4 of the frame members, (as shown in Fig. 1). The lower end of each plate is provided with an opening 27, or other suitable means, for attaching a spring 29, which in turn is secured to a bracket 30, having a set-screw 31 for securing it to the frame member.
The spring 29, exerts a tension upon the lower end of the plate 21, which holds the said plate tightly upon the edge of the frame member. The spring 29 also permits the upper end 24 of the plate 21 to be readily attached to, or detached from the frame member. The enlarged upper end portion 24, forms a finger grip for lifting-the upper end of the plate 21 oil of the apex 4 of the frame member.
A filling strip 32, is shown, in Fig. 1, inserted between the plate 21 and the edge of the frame member 1. Said filling strip 32 may be made of paper or any other suitable material, as it is held in place and protected by the plate 21. Any number of filling strips 32 may be used under the plate 21, to obtain the desired thickness.
The plate 21 and the filling strips 82, when secured upon the edges of the frame members will increase the distance between the ink-rolls and the type, and reduce the pressure which the ink-rolls will exert upon the type. The plates 21 constructed in this manner will not interfere with the operation of the ink-rolls and the plates will always remain in their proper position and also hold the filling strips in place.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a printing press having ink-rolls and a frame forming a track for the ink-rolls, a plate adapted to be placed between the said track and the ink-rolls, means for detachably securing the upper end of the plate to the frame and a spring having one end secured to the frame and its other end attached to the lower end 01": the plate.
2. In a printing press having ink-rolls and a frame forming a track for the inkrolls, a plate adapted to be placed between the said track and the ink rolls, said plate being approximately the same Width as the width of the frame, an end portion formed upon said plate of greater Width than the width of the frame and having an aperture formed therein adapted to receive the end of the frame thereby securing the end of the Copies of this patent may be obtained for plate to the frame and means for yieldingly V securing the opposite end of the plate to the frame.
3. An attachment for a printing press comprising a flexible plate, retaining lips formed upon the sides of the plate, means for detachably securing one end of the plate to the press and a spring for connecting the other end of the plate with the press.
4. An attachment for a, printing press comprising a flexible plate, retaining lips spring to the prlnting press.
In testimony whereof I afiix my s1 gnature h in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK E. MEEI'IAN.
