IRULING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 749,034, dated January 5, 1904.

To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, KARL DAUT, a subject of the Emperorof Germany, residing at Mannheim, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ruling Devices for Paper Sheets and the Like; .and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledin the art to whichit appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention has reference to a ruling device adapted to rule the sheets of paper, books, and the like by hand.
This device consists of a roller formed with several section-rollers mounted on the same axis and between which are one or several color-disks, the width of which corresponds to the thickness of the lines. The rulingroller with the inking-roller are both mounted in a frame adapted to operate them, the inking-roller being pressed against the rulingroller by a spring device.
The annexed drawings are illustrating by way of an example a device embodying the said invention.
Figure 1 is a plan view, Fig. 2 a sideview, and Fig. 3 a cross-section, of the inkingroller with the protecting case that incloses the same.
The ruling-roller is formed with several section-rollers a, which are mounted upon an axis a and between which are the ruling-disks b, the diameter of which is slightly larger than that of the sections a. The thickness of the periphery of the ruling-disks b corresponds to the thickness of the lines to be traced, while the width of the sections a is de signed to control the distance between the various lines. The ruling-disks, as well as the sections, are interchangeable.
The ruling-roller is mounted Within the circular loop of the wire frame 6, which is provided with a handle 0 for conveniently operating the same. Within the elongated loops g of the frame e is arranged the inkingroller f, which is constantly pressed against the ruling-roller by two springs h, connected to the frame. The inking-roller f consists of an axis is, upon which is placed a wooden roller which is covered with a suitable material to take up the ink, such as felt or the like. The ends of the axis is are each hearing a nut Z for the purpose of preventing the axis from sliding out of the roller and the springs 72, from deflecting.
The sections a and the disks 1) are pressed together by nuts m, which are provided at each side'on the axis 0. -Within the nuts m are arranged guiding-disks i, thediameter of which is larger than that of the ruling-disks, and these guiding-disks are each held by a nut n,so that they cannot tu rn with the rulingroller.
The stemp is designed to strengthen the frame e and has been more specially provided to prevent the ruling-roller from coming out of the said frame. A plate .9 for pressing with the thumb is fixed on the stem p and the handle 0. The plate 8 on its lower side is provided with a holder or the like i, which is employed to limit the movability of of the plate, so that the workman can conveniently take hold and operate the apparatus.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The sheet of paper to be ruled is first placed on a plate 8, the straight and parallel sides of which have between them the same distance as both guiding-disks d. Then the device is placed upon the plate in such a manner that the latter, with the sheet, will come between the said guiding-disks and that the latter by sliding along the parallel sides of the plate guide the apparatus on a straight line when moved. Shouldthe sheet of paper be Wider than the plate, one of the disks 2' has to be removed, whereas both are re moved when paper, books, and the like are to be ruled, in which case the frame e rests through its guides 11. on the paper to be ruled. The guiding-disks i are preventing the surfaces from being spotted when the ruling device is momentaneously removed from the board or when the same is at rest. They also protect the ruling-disks against all damage when thedevice is removed.
When the device is out of operation, the inking-roller f is inclosed in a box 1;, Fig. 3, which is provided with a removable cover w and with notches a; to allow of the axis is to be introduced. A cast-iron or sheet-plate frame may also be substituted for the wire frame 6. For tracing double lines rulingdisks having two sharp tracing edges may be mounted on the ruling-roller.
I claim- 1. A hand ruling device consisting of a ruling-roller in sections on a common axis, ruling devices on said axis between the rollersections, an inking-roller parallel with the ruling-roller, means for keeping the inkingroller against the ruling-roller, a frame in loops of which the ruling and inking rollers are journaled for rotary movement, and springs connecting the axis of the inking-roller with the frame, as set forth.
2. A hand ruling device consisting of a ruling-roller, an inking-roller held parallel therewith, a frame in loops of which the said rollers are rotatably mounted, springs connecting the axis of the inking-roller with the frame for holding the inking-roller against the ruling-roller, and a stem held in loops of the said frame to prevent displacement of the inking-roller, as set forth.
3. A hand ruling device consisting of a ruling-roller, an inking-roller, a frame in loops of which the said rollers are rotatably mounted, a stem connecting opposite portions of said frame, a pressure-plate mounted on said stem and engaging the handle of the frame, and springs connecting said frame with the shaft of the inking-roller, as set forth.
4. A hand ruling device consisting of a ruling-roller, an inking-roller, a spring-wire frame in loops of which said rollers are rotatably mounted, a stem connecting opposite portions of said frame, springs connecting the axis of the inking-roller with the said frame, a pressure-plate mounted on said stem and bearing on the handle of the frame, said frame being formed with the guides u, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
