MONOPRINT MULTICOLOR ATTACHMENT FOE PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 5, 1913.
Patented June 23, 1914. Serial No. 777,465.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD H. Bonmrr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Francisco, in the county of San i rancisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved Monoprint Multicolor Attachment for Printing-Presses, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invent-ion has for its object to provide an attachment for printing presses having a sectional strip for use with a plurality of colors, and a sectional reciprocating roller, the sections of the latter engaging the sections of the strips respectively for distributing ink on the latter.
Additional objects of the invention are to provide means by which the strips may be readily secured in place, and means for re ciprocating the roller.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of the invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view showing a portion of a printing press, to which my attachment is applied; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the printing press is provided with the usual bed 5, and a platen 6. The press is provided with a frame 7 having a transverse slot 8, in which are disposed the ribs 9 on the ink strips 10. These ink strips 10 are provided in sections, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and they are spaced apart so thatthey may be used for inks of different colors.- The rib 9 on each of the strips 10 is disposed in the transverse slot 8, as has been stated, these ribs 9 having threaded oriiices 11 in which mesh the screws 12, which are first passed through orifices 13 in the members 14. By this means the members 14- which project beyond the slot 8 are pressed against the frame 7 at the sides of the slot for holding the ink strips 10 in position. The ink is spread on these ink strips by means of the sectional roller which I will now describe, and which is shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This sectional roller has a shaft 15, journaled in bearings 16 in frame members 18, and 19, and to this shaft 15 there are secured the sections 20 for distributing the ink on the ink strips 10 respectively. The shaft 15, with the roller sections 20, is reciprocated longitudinally by cam means, consisting of a member 21, having a cam groove 22, in which is disposed a roller 23, mounted for rotating on a stud 24- secured to the projection 25 of the frame 19. ith the rotation of the shaft 15, the shaft with the roller sections 20 is reciprocated so that each of the roller sections 20 will distribute the ink on one of the ink strips 10. The ink from the ink strips 10 is transferred by the roller to two or more types or plates, secured to the bed 5, in the customary manher.
The frame 19 is secured to the member 27 by turning the screw 28, which is disposed through an orifice 29 in the frame 19, and which meshes in a threaded orifice 30 in the member 31, this member 31 being drawn by this means so that the member 31 with the frame 19 will embrace the member 27. There is a slot 32 in the projection 25 of the frame 19, in which is disposed aguide stnd 33, secured to the member 31. The vertical position of the member 31 and the slut is adjusted by means of the screw 34 and the nut 35.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In combination with two arms movable relatively to an ink strip, a frame member mounted on one of the arms and provided with a bearing, a frame member mounted on the other arm, a member disposed at a side of the second member, means for clamping the third member against the second frame member, one of the last two mentioned members having a bearing, a shaft journaled in the bearings, and cam means connecting the third member with the shaft for reciprocating the latter.
2. In a monoprint multicolor attachment for printing presses, a framehaving aslot, a
member for moving relatively to the frame In testimony whereof I have signed my and having a guiding projection disposed in name to this specification in the presence of to the slot, the member and an end of the two subscribing witnesses.
frame having hearings and being adapted 5 to engage a projection on another frame, a EDWARD HOUSTON BOBBITT' shaft journaled in the bearings, a roller sec- WVitnesses: tion secured to the shaft, and cam means R. H. WINSTON, for reciprocating the shaft in the bearings. L. H. ANDERSON.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents.
