IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER FOR ORNAMENTATION.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 190,040, dated April 24, 1877 application filed March 15, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HUGK, of the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a certain Improved Material from Leather, of which the following is a specification; and I do hereby declare that in the same is contained a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to a new article of manufacture to be used in the art of embroidcry; and consists in sheets of leather perforated in regular order, the openings being of circular, lozenge, or other shapes, as tastes may dictate.
The invention is designed for use in the or namentation of pocket-books, card-cases, bookcovers, and other articles requiring greater strength and flexibility in their construction than are found in perforated paper or board in common use. The leather thus perforated may be sold in sides or in regularly-trimmed sheets, or arbitrarily shaped, as the demands of trade may require.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing show perforated eather, with openings of different shapes regularly spaced, the former figure showing the perforations placed a common distance apart, and of circular shape, and the latter the openings in angular rows and lozengeshaped.
I am aware that slitted leather is used in sought is the ventilation of the articles of dress; and the regularity of the perforations and the cleanness of the out of the same are not essential. Neither, so far as I am aware, are they regarded. These considerations are essential in the manufacture of perforated leather for the uses of ornamentation by embroidery, and are duly observed in its manufacture. Neither in perforated leather for ventilated clothing need the perforations be of varied shapes; nor, as I learn, are they so made; but in my invention this feature is important.
Having described my invention, What I claim as new, and wish to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
As a new article of manufacture, perforated leather prepared in sheets for use in the arts of embroidery and thread ornamentation, the perforations being regularly spaced and shaped, and cleanly cut, as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 5th day of February, A. D. 1877.
HENRY HlUOK.
