IMPROVEMENT IN COMPOSITION-COVERED BUCKLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 195,632, dated September 25, 1877; application filed November 19, 1875.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OSCAR WIENER, of the city of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain Improved Composition Coated Buckle, of which the following is a specification:

In covering buckles with celluloid, rubber, and other compressible and plastic compositions the core of the buckle or harness trimming to be coated is first covered with the composition when in a plastic state, and the coated core is then placed insuitably-shaped molds or dies, which, being operated, the covering assumes the desired shape, and the core, with thecompressed composition, closely resembles a leather-covered article.

One or more sets of dies may be employed in the above operation.

In forming certain of such articles it has been customary to make them with a flange or rib about the exterior of the horizontal central plane of the core, and upon the upper side of such rib to cause impressions that resemble stitches, thus further simulating the appearance of a leather-co vered article; but w hen thus constructed, as the impressions are upon both sides thereof,the rib is greatly weakened, and hence becomes very liable to break along the line of the impressions representing the stitches. Furthermore, the extension of the rib along that part encompassed by the loop, which connects the buckle with the strap, renders the rib liable to be broken by the loop, and prevents the loop being sewed closely up to the buckle.

In thedevice hereinafter described the above defects are remedied by making the impressions resembling the stitches only on the up per and a strong re-enforcement of material upon the under side of the rib, and also by constructing the articles so that there is no rib of covering upon that part thereof about which the loop passes.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a buckle-core covered with celluloid. Fig. 2 is a section of same through the line aa).

In the accompanying drawings, A represents the imitation seam or row of stitches formed only on the upper side of the rib G of the composition covering of the buckle.

B represents the re-enforcement of the composition added to the lower side of the rib G, thus making it much stronger, and yet preserving its ornamental appearance, since generally only the upper side of the rib is exposed to view. E represents the position of the buckle, about which the loop F (shown in dotted lines) is secured. This portion is made smooth by omitting the rib, which therefore is not exposed to breakage under the loop, or to the danger of such fracture extending beyond the part occupied by the loopa result that would ensue were the rib extended over the exterior superficies of the coating.

In the present instance I have used celluloid for the covering composition, as being stronger, tougher, and less liable to oxidize than any other composition of which I am aware, and as thus peculiarly adapted to serve as a covering, and, moreover, as imparting a leather-like appearance, which peculiarities are desirable in harness-buckles and other articles connected with harness.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A composition-coated buckle provided upon its exterior periphery with a rib, which rib is omitted from that portion of the buckle about which the strap is secured, substantially as set forth.
